Everywhere in Wengen seems to be already booked up or tres expensive, so I have booked into the hotel Lauberhorn in Grindelwald.
Anyone know it ?

Don't know the hotel but not surprised that its all busy that week in Wengen, all the teams plus their crews stay in the village of Wengen (UK team usually at Alpenrose) plus all the staff required to set up al teh tv equipment, big monitors, all the sponsorship stuff and so on.
Good spots to watch the race either on Lauberhorn near start or somewhere near the bottom arround Austrian Hole or Ziel Schuss areas but get there early as it will be incredibly packed, I was fortunate enough a few years ago to be given a VIP 1 day pass which meant I could watch from the vantage point at Wengeneralp with the added bonus of VIP only toilets plus free food and drink, watched Finlay Micklel get his best ever downhill result live (10th place) then skied down to the hotel and listened to him being interviewed in the hotel garden whilst I enjoyed the sun on my balcony literally right above.
Be aware that when the race ends thousands of people (many who probably only ever get on skis once per year) will all be skiing down the blue run to Wengen, gets pretty busy but the parties go on till late and its all good fun. As soon as teh racers leave on Sunday the whole area goes very quiet until half term

I went last year for the first time and went to the finish area. The atmosphere was great, especially with a Swiss winner, but you couldn't really see much actual skiing, just the finish straight and the celebrations. There was the big screen there so you could see all the action though.
If I go again I would probably go up a bit higher (Wengeneralp?) to see more actual skiing and the Eiger, which is hidden from view down below too.
This won't apply to you as you're staying in Grindelwald, but for anyone else driving to the event and parking at Lauterbrunnen, you have to park a long way from the station, way beyond walking distance, but they do lay on frequent buses. Once at the station, the queue to get the train up to Wengen was unbelievable, it took at least an hour to get on the train, and I was lucky enough to get into a faster moving part of the queue. So, get there early! I actually missed the first two or three racers down, despite getting to Lauterbrunnen two hours before racing started. It's a fairly long (if pleasant) walk from Wengen to the finish area too.
The train back down had a big queue after the race, so I would plan to stick around for a few hours afterwards and enjoy the after-race festivities.
However, it was a great day out, and I would certainly go again.

suzysue2, last time I was there for a race many of the racers were happy to sign Autographs for the kids etc, prior to the race days you could just wander into the finish area and watch the guys come down at the end, then they'd sign a few autographs or pose for a pic or two before heading back up.
Some racers turn up earlier than others, some are easier to approach than others but for a day or two prior to the race you have a pretty good chance to meet the stars of the WC scene, year before I was there for teh race Bode Miller got into trouble for staying in the Silberhorn Disco/Bar till the early hours the night before the race, witnesses swear he had to have a hair of the dog before racing that day
