Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Stripped...

I've stripped some screwheads trying to get some bindings off a ski.

Could anyone talk me through how I get the screws out...?

Thanks in advance.

This set is cheaper http://www.screwfix.com/prods/18643/Drill-Bits/Specialist-Drill-Bits/Screw-Extractor-Set
I also have a narrower bit than is common in the sets. Got that from a specialist DIY tools shop, not from one of the big sheds.

Screw extractor sets are available in some of the everything-costs-one-pound or similar cheap shops, that may suffice if you only have one set of screws to deal with.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

How? were you not using a no.3 pozi 'driver?

FlyingStantoni, as above, get a screw extractor. Some come with instructions, some don't but they're straightforward bits of kit to figure out. Basically drill a pilot hole in the screw, then screw in the (reverse threaded) screw extractor. As it starts to bite into the body of the screw it will unscrew what's left. good luck

If you don't have the removal tool and there is enough head sticking out you can sometimes cut a slot in the top with a hack saw and use a flat driver.

Another way is to use a centre punch on one edge of the head and knock it round, but that won't work on tight screws.

Or drill a hole slightly smaller than a flat driver blade and hammer the blade in.

Of course all of these methods can go horribly wrong and screw your skis and or bindings, so get a tool if not confident or get someone else to do it

There are potential issues with some of these solutions.

I have visions of FlyingStantoni trying with a handheld drill trying to drill down the centre of screw with a 3mm shank recessed into some expensive bindings and even more expensive skis Madeye-Smiley

You'll be surprised how tight screws can be and still come out this way, especially if you use a baby cold chisel instead of a punch.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

This is going to end in tears, lump hammer and a cold chisel, essential ski tuning tools Toofy Grin

I'm all for an angle grinder, perhaps he could get someone in to help?

Being tight fisted, i'd go with something similar to tiffin's suggestions. If the screw protudes from the surface at all either mole grips or cut a slot and screwdriver it. If it's sunk then hammer in a screwdriver or allen key and try turning it from that. But also as tiffin said, these are total bodge jobs. The mole grip one has been pretty successful for me though (on disc brake rotor bolts though rather than skis).

To my mind, an angle grinder may be a little OTT, bearing in mind the OP's problem, however a dremel may be a possibility Very Happy

Need more info re toe or heel recessed or what and why. My choice would be to drill off the heads using a drill press and a slow speed plus some cutting fluid (screws are high tensile steel). Then lift the binding off and revert to mole grips. However if you want to relocate the bindings then just grind off (not too much heat) the protruding screw shank and leave it in the ski.
