Hi, hope you all did not have too dull a summer, waiting for winter. What`s peoples thoughts on snow reliability in Val on the 12th Dec ? I know it should be pretty good higher up, but what about skiing back to resort level? (Kids want christmas at home, before St. Nick forgets them completely)

cstreat, St. Nick is on strike this year but he can be found enjoying the alps around 24th/25th December! If the kids HAVE to see him that is probably the best bet! Trying to help you..... erm I mean the kids!

Espace Killy is scheduled to open on 28th Nov this year, though is sometimes put back a week or so, depending on snow cover. I am fairly sure that the last few years have seen lots of early season snow - I've been in Espace Killy in early Dec for the past two years and there was loads of snow both times.
Irrespective of amount of natural snow, it's usually been cold enough for snowmaking to ensure that some resort runs are open - so you should be ok.

For the past few years we have done the Inspired to Ski Course based in Tignes around the 2nd or 3rd week in December and will be there again this year on 12th December. We have always had good snow conditions though it can be bitterly cold and sometimes icy.
We stayed on for an extra week last year and I do recall it pouring with rain on Christmas Eve and the torchlight descent was soaked. However, Christmas Morning lots of the white fluffy stuff was falling by the bucklet load (though this brought poor visibility/high winds). Snow cover was still v. good though.

I did a ski course with Inspired to ski (or the forerunner) that time one year (can't remember which.....) and there was plenty of snow in Tignes. Lots wasn't open, but that still left lots that was.

- as cstreat asks...
living there I can honestly say that actually skiing back down into town can be a little hit and miss - the cannons are on full whack from November and you usually can but dont expect to go off-piste or possibly have a choice of run - or maybe the whole width of slope open but anything worse than that would be below average. Often all the main runs home are open... BESIDES the World Cup comes to town the weekend of the 17th December so that gives an idea of coverage!... if its good enough for them..........
