Hey,
Can anyone recommend a good resort, similar to Ischgl or St. Anton? I am looking for somewhere that has plenty of long runs and extensive skiing/snowboarding, with a good apres ski also! I have been to Mayrhofen which had a great apres ski element but the pistes were often very short... Just deciding where to book for next January and any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Wasn't that impressed with the après in Kitz. Soelden also gets my vote.

I'd say Ischgl or St. Anton are the most similar, you might want to try them...

Forget France if you are looking for the type of apres you experienced in St Anton - they just don't do it that way in France.

Another vote for Sölden. Oh and shock that anybody would suggest anywhere in France in response to the original question.
Apres is probably as good as Ischgl. Nightlife not quite as good, but still pretty good.
Ski area is great. You've got a couple of glaciers, so it's snow sure. Some good long runs. You've got a day at Obergurgl on the lift pass with a free bus to get you there.
Unfortunately the town isn't the most picturesque, but I suspect that isn't much of a consideration.

Away from the main road, probably. But the main road lets things down IMO. The traffic to and from Obergurgl can be a pain as well. Still a great place though.

The last time I stayed there my accommodation was actually on the main road at the start of the big serpentine to the Glacier road and it certainly was not noticeable. I think the "road" is often over-exaggerated to be honest. Many resorts have roads passing through them to other ski resorts. In winter this road is a dead-end as the Trimmeljoch Pass is closed, so there is not real HGV traffic for instance.
Maybe you should look further afield next time

Lager, I suppose I was really comparing it to the likes of VT/Tignes/Avoriaz etc - all of which came to mind when you mentioned that is was not the most picturesque of towns

I would vote for Saalbach. Lots of long pistes, the ring route around Hinterglemm and traditional Austrian Apres

I'd recommend Sölden too if you fancy Austria again.
I second the suggestions of Meribel, Val d'Isere and Chamonix if you want to try France. I can't really comment on Verbier as I've not skied there but I thought it was the Swiss equivalent of St Anton and Ischgl in terms of apres ski?

What! I'm the first person on this thread to say Mayrhofen, in my usual, predictable fashion. Apres is great, so's the skiing, easy transfers from Munich.

A great place is Cervinia in Itlay, Its Europe's highest resorts! Its linked to Switzerland and the highest point is over 3000 meters.
Italys best resort, like Les Arc in france but friendly and has class!

Hey,
I'm looking to come over to Europe in late Jan/most of feb to do a week and a half in france (val d'isere or meribel??) and then another week and a half in Austria (st anton or ischgl??). There's 3 of us and we're all 18 and will have just finished school, so we want the best après from each location. We are all really advanced skiiers, so we are more worried about the après than the skiing at the location in a way...
I've done val d'isere before and also courchevel. Is meribel more or less après than val?
Which is the best place from those above, or are there other suggestions too?

We had a fantastic, spacious, two person/1 bedroom apartment there - but with a lovely buffet breakfast included. Nice quiet location but only 50m walk (across the river from) the Giggijoch lift and an easy, short walk to the town centre for apres ski.
IIRC we paid about £35 per person per night (via Booking.com) in the last week of the season in 2012.

Verbier - great skiing and infrastructure, but it's bloomin' expensive, especially for food and après.
