mobskaardal, Irish actually. The kelly family are a tribe of hippies who were driven out of Ireland by poverty about thirty years ago, mainly because no Irishman in his right mind would buy one of their records. After roaming around Europe for a while they finally settled in Germany and being hippies produced inumerable kellys. The ever increasing number of kellys took up the cause and produced unbearable song after unbearable song... until finally Joey Kelly couldn't stand it any longer and decided to become an extreme sportsman doing things like wok racing and running marathons in the sahara.
Like I say, he's completely mad, so I think Hermann has got a problem!
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

The two final members of Maier's team have been named. One is a female Soldier called Sabrina Grillitsch (27) who has completed commando training and the other Alexander Serdjukov (3 is a man who has trained and raced huskys. The other member of the team namely TV presenter Tom Walek is no slouch either he's competed in Ironman races etc.
There is no greater athlete than Hermann....the Austrians will win

It doesn't sound very sensible to me for somebody with reduced feeling in one foot to be wandering around in Antarctica.

Up to now I've only know of Joey Kelly through the wok racing etc but after searching the 'tinernet I now see he's done a lot of Ironman (13 races) and other endurance racing too. There's no doubting Maiers place as one of the best skiers of all time but downhill skiing is very different to endurance racing. With temps of minus 40 and pulling a sledge many km's everyday it will also be a major mental test for the competitors. Markus Lanz doesn't appear to be pysically in the same league as the other German competitors though.

If Maier had been sensible he'd still be laying bricks
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

DB, never heard of either of them. I'm a bit doubtful about Markus Lanz. Not sure what qualifications he has for this. Maybe the Austrians are in a stronger position after all.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

He must have been "laying" some when he crashed as per the earlier link......
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Update -
Maier has lost 7 kg (ca. 1 stone). The Austrians have covered approx 75% of the distance (not sure how the Germans are doing) but one of Maiers team - Alex Serdjukov has had to give up. His gloves became wet and the very low temps mean he would have lost fingers to frostbite.
Both teams have now reached the Southpole ahead of target but which team won is being held a secret - only to be revealed in a documentary next year

Last night was the first episode of the series.
If showed the team selection proces and also details about the first sucessful race to the south pole between Scott and Amundsen.
Joey Kelly had completed a 900 km survival march through Germany shortly before. Joey took little supplies with him on the German march and was living from handouts. He lost 15 kg (over 2 stone) although he was slim before starting the march. The end result was that he had burnt himself out and lost a lot of muscle mass - he should have been one of if not the strongest members of the german team but was the weakest during the the first South Pole fitness tests.
Not a lot of people know this (well I didn't) but a skiing champion namely Olav Bjaaland was also involved in the Scott / Amundsen race.
