Even though I'm a bit of a gear whore, this is the first summer in recent memory that I'v ebeen able to resist the siren call of gear bargains, clothing and other shiny objects. This therefore makes me concerned that skiing has lost its attraction. Solutions?

I've lost all interest in skis and gear, and I can't wait for the season to start - think I'm more excited about this winter than the last 4 seasons. Saying that, I've bought a new jacket and pants in the sales, but I did need them...

don't get me wrong, I like new stuff and all but what I like more is when the new stuff becomes old but still works and you dont have to worry about it being stolen or wrecked. The only thing is no matter how old and scratched my skis are I still hate lift Q stomping that goes on.

I ordered new skis in April. I hope to receive them in October. This allowed me to forget about them a bit through the World Cup, the pointless criggit v Bangla and Pakistan, the European Athletics Championships, cycle training for London to Paris in September, a festival at which I pretended to be in my early 20s, and the start of the football season.
Now, the realisation that my new toys will soon be here has rekindled my excitement in the season ahead. I appreciate this is a slightly uneconomical approach, but perhaps you could try it next year?

What? with the same catagories as a ski test card....ride quality...forgiveness etc
|
|
|
|
|
You know it makes sense.
|
Maybe some catagories would be more applicable to males or females
e.g.
Weight
Last service
Days riden
Bump performance
Stiffness and width
Waxed?
Bindings & Premature release
etc

Wouldn't length be temperature dependent?

fatbob, it must just mean you've run out of space to put it all. You just need to offload some kit and start all over again...

I can't justify any more ski gear for a single holiday next year - I now own decent skis, sallies, jacket, goggles, gloves, passable helmet and I reckon on getting another year or two out of my boots now the shop added some more filling to them - the shell is too big, but at the moment they have made them considerably snugger to the point where I wouldn't want them more so and they are still comfy to wear so no new boots needed either at the moment (I think anyway). So I can't go gear shopping either. However, why is it I still like looking at new technical gear - I'm not into fashion clothes shopping so much, but a specialist outdoor sports shop (riding, skiing, hiking etc.) and I will happily browse for some time. fatbob, what you need is an alternative sport, I don't need anymore ski gear, but I've just discovered hill walking and couldn't resist liberating some goretex from Keswick before I came home this week

fatbob, the problem to turning to the obvious alternative/additional sport of MTB-ing, as Kramer, I (and soon Batman123) found out, was that after 3 years you have exactly the same problem. The other day I bought a bike stand, excitedly propped the bike up but then just stared at it wondering what the hell to mend/change/tweak/fiddle/fettle and couldn't think of anything. Kite surfing next...

Sharkymark, yeah the whats next seems to creep in a lot. I used to fly planes, then golfed now skiing and i feel another expensive hobby coming up as i get bored with skiing... Diving seems to tick all the boxes (expensive gear, exotic locations, weeks away for home on "training" courses, and the excuse that once you learn how to teach it you can make 7 quid an hour somewhere)

Hurtle, i'm starting to get bored with skiing cause i aint getting better.....I was all into golf for a while and after i starting getting a few 70's it would have taken a couple goes a week to get any better and i didnt fancy the driving range three times a week and havent gone for two years now.... kinda like skiing, dont really want to go to the gym three times a week and freeze to death for 6 weeks on a glacier every autumn... so scuba diving might be in my future as a summer pastime

skimottaret, I understand that. Similarly, to get any better at playing the piano, I would have had to immure myself for 3+ hours per day practice. No thanks.

Yes when the learning curve flattens out and needs so much time / effort to get just a little bit further up the curve, it's often more rewarding to take up something else.

It's nice when you can simply adjust your expectations. If I hadn't done that with skiing, I would have given up long ago. I miss playing the piano and wish now that I had adjusted my expectations rather than give up. Too late now - I left it too long.
