Apologies - to Swiller and all other avalanche collectors - for the false alarm last week. I'd been emailed by the programme makers that the Lewes Avalanche item was going out last Thursday 29 July. I've just spoken to the producer of Questions Questions who's confirmed that the interview goes out in today's show - Radio 4, 1.30.
We had some fun putting it together down in Lewes, initially by trying to gain access to a back garden of one of the cottages directly under the avalanche cliff (the edge of Cliffe Hill). Some of these cottages replaced the eleven dwellings which were destroyed, or partly destroyed, by the avalanche. That wasn't successful, so we moved to some land used by South Street Bonfire Society, next to the river. That site gives a great view of the whole scene.
The Snowdrop Inn, as reported some months ago, is under new ownership with much improved food. We did part of the recording next to the framed copy of William Thompson's pamphlet of 1863, and his eye-witness record of the disaster site, rescue and recovery.
If you miss the live transmission, it should be on BBC iPlayer for a week.

I was not aware weather science was that advanced in the 1830s. A depression centred on Mont Blanc affecting Lewes sounds very precise for those days.

Hollywood are probably sniffing around now with a view to making a blockbuster. I would suggest a flashback type movie with Jeff Goldblum as DG relentlless in his investigation into finding the truth about Lewes. Russell Crowe and Julia Roberts could be the Lewes residents in the cottages in 1835 battling to save their neighbours from the huge avalanche.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I hadn't heard the edit until it went out and I think Whistledown Productions - who put it together for the Beeb - did a grand job. The readings (the voice was Dilly Barlow) were from the pamphlet mentioned above, which you can read in full in the Snowdrop Inn.
Latchico, very good point. You're quite correct that weather science - particularly storm science - was relatively undeveloped in 1836, although good data (temps, barometric pressure, wind direction (but not very reliable on wind strength etc) was being recorded by meteorologists across Europe.
The knowledge that the storm was centred near Mont Blanc comes from a very impressive retrospective analysis of that data, which I'll be able to talk about in a while.

Re. the Hollywood angle. Regrettably, all the directors/actors I'd like to work with on this project are now dead. Most of them died in avalanches.

It's interesting how skiers always expect things to be deeper. My voice was deeper last winter. Then there was a thaw (along with my genitalia being swept away by an avalanche).
