Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Getting around the Chamonix valley in the evening

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

A group of us are spending a fortnight in the Chamonix valley. We're happily booked into an apartment in Argentiere for a week and I now need to decide between extending that stay for another week or moving us all into town for the second week. We're not hiring a car (or at least we're hoping not to) so one of the concerns is getting around of an evening - Argentiere may get a bit 'same-same' after a fortnight. We're happy to use the buses to get between ski slopes during the day, but how is public transport (trains and/or buses) for getting between Argentiere and Chamonix of an evening?

Many thanks

sinbad7, you can download the valley bus timetables from this page http://www.chamonix.com/transport-in-the-valley,13,en.html. It doesn't look as though there are night services but I know the town hall is trying to improve the use of public transport. A chum suggests there are some form of night buses but he's not sure.

Taxi services are expensive and unreliable.

Not if you pay the price they initially quote (i.e. get fleeced!) They seem to be quite reliable then!

Last train back is about 20.30 or 21.30 if memory serves but there is an Chamonuit night bus service. Argentiere is quite good for skier oriented bars - Stone, Dahu, Office, Rusti, Slalom, Savoy. Unless you're planning on skiing AdM every day i think the skiing benefits of being at Argentiere outweigh the inconvenience of the odd bus/train ride in to Cham to take in the hotties at Chambre9.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There was a night service last season, with a bus leaving Chamonix just after 10 and another just after midnight, no cost - same bus as the lift bus during the day

fatbob, nice one - timetable from last year here... http://www.chamonix-bus.com/Maj/Chamonuit.pdf

Ummm, does Argentiere have any NON-ski oriented bars? I was thinking ART, or perhaps poetry readings?

There is an art gallery that seemed to be doing an evening soiree last time I was there. By skier orientated I guess I draw a distinction from poser palaces, stag weekend barns and strip clubs of Chamonix proper.

Strip Clubs?

I don't think that anything charging €250 for entrance can be qualified as a strip club!!

OK, just booked the first week this morning. Second week is still up for grabs.

We're certainly not skiing AdM every day. Having a fortnight I guess we'll ski everywhere at least once, including Courmayeur. We'll focus on Les Grands Montets and Le Tour for the first week, along with a couple of guided days for the Vallee Blanche (at least once) and perhaps Pas de Chevre.

20 mins on the bus doesn't seem too bad. OK, I'll bite. What's the quoted (rip off) cost for a taxi to Argentiere?

sinbad7, seeing as you appear to be coming a long way have you thought of the second week in a completely different resort?

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I tend to agree with kitenski, you could spend the second week in Verbier or Zermatt. or even Megeve or Flaine.
Not that there is not enough in Cham for a second week - I could spend a week on Flegere and Brevent, but if bored or bad visibility you have Les Houches. To stay, I would certainly move into the centre - without a car you would get fed up of the trip back out to Argentiere.

Taxi at night Cham to Arg. Can not be definite, but at least 50 euros.
