Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

French Parking Fines

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just discovered my son has two unpaid parking tickets from around Easter time. Its says on the tickets that if you don't pay within 45 days then its a heap load more. Does anyone know if the French follow these up and send the demands for money to the UK ?

I'm thinking I should pay but what should have been €170 will have gone up to €450 which I don't have spare right now. Oh don't you love children !!!

Hi Lou, yep thats been covered but I have a French bank, he does not, so its cheaper (exchange rate that is) for me to send the money than him. Just looking to see what other SnowHeads have experienced re the chasing of fines.

I recieved a parking fine last year. I'd over stayed during the free lunch time by about 20 min. I was advised to ignore it ( it was for much less than the fines your son has), since we have British plates and they are unlikely to chase it up. However I am a frequent visitor to that area, and would not like to be stopped for something else for them to find I had an outstanding ticket. So OH chickened out and paid it.

fred,
If you plan on taking that car into France again then may be worth considering paying up ( or get your son to pay up!); if you get pulled & they have it on record as 'owing' then you will be in deeper s**t!

I paid up a local parking fine for similar reasons to JulesB. But it was only about 40 euros. fred, I'd be very angry with my son, if I were you. Hang around - there are plenty of people with French experience here, who might be able to give you some more reassuring information.

fred, afaik there is no facility for the French police to be able to send on the tickets to a UK address. We were told by English friends who live there to ignore the tickets.

fred, having left it so long, I'd be inclined to continue to leave it - the fine has presumably done most of it's growing already, as there must be some statutory limit to how many years salary they can sting you for a parking ticket. We paid ours because the car is regularly parked in much the same place.

and tell the boy he can't borrow the car again until he's paid the fine! wink

For your son to have been driving in France he must be over 21 no? In which case let him make the decision. Oh for parents like you. As said ^ unless the car with the same registration is planning on being back in France, ignore it.

FWIW I used to love parking my Swiss registered car in the UK, never paid for parking and I have a stack of tickets an inch deep. None of which will ever be tracked. (Obviously not advocated when towing is a possibility). Gave me great pleasure. As did driving though those annoying average speed check areas.

Depends if the same reg plates are going back to France again. I know someone who drove past lots of french cameras saying no problem I have British plates. He then got stopped by a Gendarme who checked the computer and impounded his car until he paid about 3000 euro in back fines!

Hells Bells, They are in Plan Peisey too - but they give out a polite note first, signed on behalf of the mayor, expaining that you have parked illegally & giving you 24hrs to move your car, Then, I'm told its 120euros. One of our guests received one this year & rang my brother to complain Confused

fred, I would note that we had our french account "dipped" by the commune for non-payment of taxe d'habitation (they'd been sending the bills to our prior UK address despite 3 registered, signed-on-delivery, letters, idiots!) i.e. they just lifted the money out of our account. So if they're joined up enough to connect your car to your french identity, you may find the problem has already been solved.

I can't imagine they're that joined up though.

My inclination would be to pay the original fine...

Also, see if you can find a forum discussing the finer points...and if you find something very helpful, let us know.

thefatcontroller,

As per what Hells Bells says its not just the "police municipale" that issues parking tickets, it's also the gendarmes and the national police (who were the only ones allowed to do this until polices municipales were created).

I am of little help on this one: I have had one speeding ticket and one parking fine in France. The former I was still living there so no choice but to pay, the latter, it was my dad's car so I paid up otherwise he'd have been the one in trouble.
Haven't had a fine with my own vehicle in France since then so no idea if they follow them up, although I doubt very much they would. The only minor risk would be to be "caught" again with the same car in the futur and have to pay arrears etc..

Unlikely though..

I have about 15 outstanding speeding fines from Switzerland on hire cars from 5 years ago, have been back numerous times, never a problem. The Swiss spent a year writing to me at home in the UK in German which I simply ignored.

Parking tickets from France on a UK plated car would not worry me, little or nothing they can do.

To echo previous comments your son is a man treat him like one, ie let him sort his own sh** out or he will still be living at home when he is 30.

Steilhang, Your not kidding 110k in a 90k zone. 3 hours in police station 1500 swiss francs and a 6 month ban from driving
in Switzerland. We now drive to Italy through France, 90 euroes for doing 182 k in a 130 k zone not bad, and very friendly officers.

It's about there was another crackdown by the French Police for that level of disregard for the speed limit.
In most UK counties 182 k (114mph) will lead to a ban a fine and 6 to 9 points and rightly so.

The swiss police experience that tipped it for me was when I saw them at the top of the Julier pass sending anyone who didn't have snow chains back down to St.Moritz to get some! I mean what a bunch of motherfuckers! Why didn't they stop them at the bottom ( where there is ample space to do so )! Assholes!

Sorry, but I seriously doubt that UK plod are collecting the Swiss plod's speeding fines for them. Especially a Detective Inspector and Detective Sergeant.

If it's a hire car, pay the fine or run the risk of being declined hire cars.

If it's your own car, you are in the same boat as a Swiss driver, in his car, who sets off a UK speed camera on the M11.

Unless... the same two coppers are now over in Zurich, staying in a very swanky hotel, knocking on doors for £60 fines. I'll leave you to decide how likely that is.

The Swiss are, and always have been 'robbing B******ds'.

For a country that has no motorsport, its hardly surprising that their countrymen don't know how to drive properly Shocked

As for their Police, if ever you get a ticket in Switzerland pay it. Even in a hire car. The Police will contact the hire company, get your passport ID and register it against your passport. And they never forget. 15 yrs later, when you tip up at Passport Control, they'll swipe your passport and... 'excuse me sir, (well actually without the sir) follow me, to a darkened room, where they will want the fines paid with interest.

As a complete aside, 4 years ago, I got flashed by a camera at 5am on an empty, slightly downhill motorway, in my car, between the border and Geneva Airport. I was doing 124kph in a 100kph limit.

How much do you think the fine was?

Na, add some.

Think again....

na... more than that....

it was 1,440 Swiss Francs, + 500 Swiss prosecution costs + 1 month ban from driving in Switzerland. Shocked

Oh come on...

Do you really think our Chief Counstables are sending senior UK Police officers round to collect traffic fines for the Swiss Police? Or having them escort people on flights to Bern, all of this at the UK tax payers' expense?

You may have been told it happened, but a moments thought would tell you that it didn't.

IANSKI, Welcome to snowHead

I have no idea how to pay a parking fine from the UK.
How good is your French - you could try ringing & explaining you are back in the UK & offer a credit card to pay with Puzzled

Or do it through the car hire company - although expect a hike in payment probably if you did it that way.

According to French TV a couple of days ago the mechanism is now in place for the collection of motoring fines (ex parking fines) and application of points europe wide. They said the scheme will take a while to get into gear.

I recently was pursued for a Swiss parking fine. My motorbike was not parked entirely within the box (too many bikes) in a private! parking for my company. The building managers informed the police about this disgraceful state of affairs, the police spent 7 months investigating this crime of the century and I got the standard 40 CHF fine, plus all the costs of their investigation. Which has pissed me off no end. Legal advice was to "just pay it" as people have gone to court and ended up with thousands of francs of costs. The lawyer's worry was that the building manager would have taken a photo of my bike and that for the court it would then be an open and shut case.

Ianski, Welcome.
If you can't find out how to pay, you could just leave it to the carhire company, but this you will find will cost you approx €25, which they will deduct directly from the creditcard used for the booking - as I found out on a €5 parking ticket in Germany once Shocked
A quick call to them should clarify.

Fred, Ever thought of changing car number plates, might be cheaper than paying a hefty fine ???
