Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

This had already gone through my mind. No worries - your demo-ing will be so dire/funny/painful/terminal (delete as appropriate) that nobody will feel inclined to follow your example! Toofy Grin

Er, what was that about a wind-up...?

This thread is useless without pictures of all of you in your sitting rooms/places of work.

I did my first 360 off piste and managed to pull it off pretty cleanly, then started building back country kickers and just playing around with whats possible, doing it with a powder landing is really fun as if you land a bit badly it doesn't hurt and if you go off too big its a soft transition. I can't say I've done any on hard pack but I'm aiming to get to the freestyle session's nights with the K2's once I get them, want to get good at rails to..

I wouldn't advise just starting off with 180's like other people I have a friend who started off learning 180's and now hes struggling so much to extend that because its become natural for him... get some and go for the full shazam!

Shocked Shocked Perhaps I won't book for that one Madeye-Smiley

I tried in trainers (I normally don't do trainers but we had athletics at school this afternoon Toofy Grin ) in the kitchen and I could only do 270 Sad But I think I am a little older and more unfit than you skimottaret Laughing Laughing

have just tried, in the kitchen whilst the Kenwood Chef was whisking up the meringue. In Crocs, I could do 270 the first time I tried. With a bit of practice and trainers I could do 360 I think - but not tonight as the lodger goes to bed early! I'm not fat, but I am old and have no intention of trying it on skis. Fastman had an impressive little trick - a 180 from standing, seemed completely effortless the way he did it and an easy way of turning round. I can't get anywhere close. Sad

270 or perhaps a bit more, first go, in socks. I'm old AND fat AND unfit. But like you, pam w, I have zero intention of trying this on skis.

So how does this 270 thing work then?

My simple mind says - land sideways to direction of travel and... WHUMMP: you've got all the ingredients needed for a helmet thread.

I'm liking what I'm hearing here, but some explanations bout this would be useful.

JimW, ummmm, that's kinda the point. It doesn't, so best avoided. If you can't manage the rotation whilst stood still you're pretty unlikely to manage it on skis...

JimW, it is a good idea to look for natural features at the edge of a piste, so that with a ~270 rotation you are going to land with the slope.

beanie1, only one. I have a really 'natural' way to spin (to my left) and the other is hard to force and looks even messier.

I was thinking about this in bed last night... my blood racing from all this leaping around in the kitchen. I can only rotate to the left, really. On a snowboard I would ride regular. Is there a connection? I would be surprised if many untrained folk could rotate equally well in both directions, though I suppose the freestyle people have to?

pam w, I've just been trying them on dry land. My natural tendency is to rotate to the right, and when thinking it through I didn't think I'd be able to do it to the left. Pleased to report I can!

I was wondering whether there was a relationship between the preferred direction of spin and preferred front foot on a snowboard/skateboard/scooter. Whilst googling I came across this "spinning girl" illusion..... which way does she spin for you? http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=27

pam w, I always spin anti-clockwise, in trampolining you're taught to always spin the same way so I find it really hard to overcome this without serious concentration. I board goofy though. I guess I'm not an ambiturner Laughing

pam w, no, certainly snowboarders spin both ways hence there being four separate 1080s possible in the half pipe.

I have only ever landed 360s on dryslope, only tried once on snow. If you are going to learn on dryslope though use some clothes and gloves that you don't mind destroying.

On the spinning I only ever spin left, the one time I tried spinning right I got confused as I came up to the lip, didn't really spin, and fell flat on my face. I also am a regular boarder and am sure that the two things are linked.

Swirly, I was under the impression that snowboarders found it just as hard as skiers to spin in the unnatural direction. I can't see any reason why one should be easier than the other anyway.

rambotion, most likely they do but if you wanted to be avle to put a world class run down the pipe a year or so ago you had to be able to do a 1080 in each direction off each edge.

In the good old days ski freestylers usually spin the same way, even if it was inverted jumps etc with rotations and inverted jumps.

For a good old twister (360) just spin using a good push, carve from your leading ski rotate your arms and shoulders while your head, as said above, look where you are going to land.

Or you could just go for a vertical 360!! example =

Pretty sure that's right, I could only spin towards the left (so leading with the right foot), and on the rare occasions that I board I take a goofy stance (that is right foot forwards, right?).

I'm a little late to the party. But the 270 in croc's part got me to stood right up from the sofa and gave it a go immediately!

On third try, I landed the 360 -- wearing slippers! Shocked...Laughing

Tomorrow, I'll put on my trainer to practice a bit of "spot the landing". I'll see if I can land exactly 360 and no more (nor less) in a consistant fashion. And if that works... rolling eyes

I'm not that old yet, and still reasonably fit. So I'll think about giving it a go next winter, before I got old. Shocked

Great, skimottaret, now it's not just in the UK that people are jumping up and down like loons - mostly wearing completely unsuitable footwear - in their sitting rooms and places of work. How long before the first wipeout? And will it be recorded on YouTube? rolling eyes

The thing is, the nature of the rotation is very different off a jump, with skis (or a snowboard) isn't it? To do a 360 in yer slippers you need a fast rotation - but off a jump the 360 will take a lot longer, and there's more inertia to overcome.

Never tried on skis but from my skating days I found that the spin itself is easier when moving forward as you have longer in the air to complete it. Also the ramp will help of course. Landing with planks tied to your feet is a different thing though Smile
