kitenski, that's a good question. As you say snow speed can change a lot. Even between hits. See T.Hall at Chads Gap!
Mostly it's experience, a few speed checks help. Seeing where other people drop from helps too but sometimes they have fresh wax so it can confuse things. It's just about sacking up for it in the end!
