Poster: A snowHead
|
Now that the winter has finished I have been thinking of spending sometime at my local dry ski slope (plymouth). I thought that it could be a good opportunity to learn something new before next winter. My local slope has a freestyle night, but you need t use your own skis and so I was going to look for some just for this purpose.
I guess that I will be needing skis a bit shorter than I already use (179, I am 5'11, 75kg), but how much shorter should I go?
Thanks
James

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I would go about 170. You want them to be quite light and nimble. Would try and buy second hand though, new skis for a dry slope is a bit of a waste.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

in addition to twin tips get yourself some private medical insurance before doing freestyle on a dry slope

Dry slope wrecks ski, used to help coach the park days at Wycombe, the amount of core shots we used to get from the matting! Have you one any freestyle before, if you're a complete newbie then maybe drop to 170 but to be honest I'd say stick at what you're used to, go too small and you'll loose stability on landing. If youre getting the skis just for the dryslope or park then I'd recomend centre mounting them aswell to improve on balance on rails and spins.
Check out kiwi1's deals on the Icelantic Da'Nollie, sick park skis, new for £100 I think!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

the_doc, I have had a little but not much experience. Might drop down to 175-170 or so and my current skis are centre mounted.
Second hand would be ideal - £115 delivered is a great deal I'll have to contact the guy.
skimottaret, yes mate I'll probably should take out some insurance!

Can't you just use your current skis then (guessing if they're centre-mounted they'll be twins), and buy a nice new set for next winter if they get too trashed?

Watch out for the Plymouth dry slope. I have trashed skis there before. The surface is thick plastic bristles which creates a lot of heat and burns the bases out next to the edges. It's worse there than anywhere else.
Get some blue wax from Data and apply liberally before every session.. Should prolong the inevitable!!

Elston, Liveezy, or some of this. Good stuff, but has to be applied with care!
