Not directly linked to skiing, but it's a route many Snowheads will know rather well. I am going to the Nurburgring for the Easter break. Leaving Manchester for our (good Friday) 12.25pm ferry from Dover to Calais. What time do I need to leave Manchester? Also coming back on Easter Monday, same time crossing from Calais to Dover. How bad is traffic likely to be?

You are more likely to meet traffic on the way back on the Monday, especially if the weather is fine over the Saturday and Sunday. As for bottlenecks, etc a lot depends on which route you are intending on using. Certainly the day trippers may cause you a few headaches as you move back from the Nürburgring to Calais. Can't advise as to traffic and travel times in the UK as I've not been back since the beginning of November 2010 when I swore I would never, ever try and second guess what weekend drivers were going to do in the UK. Took me longer to reach Bristol from Dover than it had to drive from Munich to Dunkirk.

@Ricklovesthepowder, on a normal day, I allow 3 hours from Banbury to go to either Manchester or Eurotunnel. So id say 6 hours, of course if traffic is light you'll have plenty of spare time!!!

Alarm set for 3.30am. Will leave at 4 can always stop off for breakfast once down there. Do P&O stick you in an earlier ferry free if there is room which will then free up space on the later ferry? Or will they make us wait for our allocated crossing?

He should be on the continent by now unless they make him wait for his booked crossing. At current traffic level it should only take about 5 hrs

Currently sat inside the port, but not even reached the check in part yet. Queues are horrendous, no toilet facilities either until we have checked in apparently. Going to be here for hours
Over three hours to move 200m to passport control, then within 10 minutes had checked in, boarded and sat having lunch. Not got a clue what the queuing was for but a lot of very annoyed people as no communication what so ever. Just setting sail now, will use the euro tunnel on future crossing though

You know it makes sense.

@Ricklovesthepowder, 90 minute delay on eurotunnel but civilised

Although it's a bit of a detour, albeit quite scenic....

What's the likelihood of Monday's crossing being effected by the bad weather? How bad does it usually get before they do start to cancel?

Depends on how many British people over 50%, and it will be cancelled till Wednesday. That's not weather dependent.
If it's not cancelled the crossing with be really rough and scary.
But those ferries never sink, they just keep going.
I think.

@Ricklovesthepowder, The storm is late Sunday night, early Monday morning with winds easing into Monday afternoon so you should be ok. The biggest problem is trying to get the ferries in and out of Dover harbour. When it gets really bad you find yourself going around in circles in the English Channel

@BergenBergen, thank you. Just got from Nurburgring to Calais in 4h 20m, went through passport control and got to check in and they advised us the next ferry is 3.20, but there is no guarantee that it will be going, or that we will get on it. They asked would we like to transfer into eurotunnel for free. So now sat waiting to board the 12.20 eurotunnel. Winner lol
