Hi  . Im off to val d'isere next week. Looking for recommendations for restaurants to go to/avoid. Spending my 30th whilst im out there,so dont want an expensive place with crap food etc. Also,if anybody knows of some good off piste areas,and other pisted runs that people would vouch for. Will be skiing Tignes aswell,so any gumpf for there would be welcome. Thanks.

http://justvaldisere.com/ has some recommendations for restuarants - look for "Where we like to eat" - and lots of other good Val d'Isere info.

http://www.valdisere.com/gb/ from the tourist board gives masses of info.
Val d'Isere (and Tignes) have fantastic off-piste available, and the pistes are wonderful. Be safe and go with a guide. Ski schools such as http://www.alpineexperience.com specialise in off piste skiing. Whichever ski school or guide your use, it is worth booking before you arrive in the resort as they can be full up.

barthez1980, I mentioned on your other thread about this:
L'Edelweiss (off the side of the Mangard piste in le Fornet) -advise booking, or also in le Fornet l'Ancolie - walk past the lift station downhill and restaurant is down on your left at bout 70-100m.
We have eaten at both these places for lunch (from Tignes).
Don't know about in-resort restaurants as have never stayed in VDI.

There's a nice restaurant right next to the bottom of the Madeleine Express lift in Val - lovely patisserie too. Can't fault the pistes in Val or Tignes, but the runs home to Val can be busy and heavy at night.

If you're looking for a nice meal on the mountain then Le Signal in Le Fornet (top of the cable car, bottom of the fornet bubble) does very good food. Not cheap, but well worth it. They gave us a bottle of Genepi last time to help ourselves too, my dad took advantage a little too much.. Which lead to some pretty hilarious skiing later on..

Spikyhedgehog, I reckon your dad must be the bloke who took my skis (by mistake) from the rack outside that restaurant last Easter. Fortunately he discovered his mistake after going up the bubble.

I heard good things about Coulior in Val Clarets. The best place I ate at was in Le Lac. I don't remember the name but they make their own cheese there. It looks like a large chalet from the outside but the food was 'stupendous'. I tried both foie gras and fondue for the first time. The fondue was the b****x!

Try dinner in the Lodge Restaurant (between Victors and Dicks) - it does all the regular fondue etc plus excellent steaks at a much more reasonable price than Le Casserole (and better service by all accounts). If you are looking for something special the 1789 (down by the Warm Up bar I think) and La Corniche (tucked away behind the church) are supposed to be very good but pricey and there's La Pedrix Blanche for seafood.
It was getting warm there over last weekend (rain as high as 2400m!) but by all accounts the temps have come down this week and the sky has been blue again so you should be up for a great week. If you can still ski all the way down to Les Brevieres, try the L'Amailly reseataurant over the bridge and across the road for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine. Waiters have a great sense of humour (i.e. are barking), is not as crowded as the other places on and before the bridge and the food is pretty decent.
And don't forget to enjoy a few afternoons in La Folie Douce at the top of the La Daille gondola - good tunes and dancing (nightclub priced drinks though).

Avoid Sur La Montagne on the High Street. Over-priced, slow service, bad attitude. Instead, try the Lodge (for value, friendly service, menu variety), Le Corniche (for fondues, brasserades etc.) or the Taverne d'Alsace (for quality food, higher prices, friendly staff, good atmosphere).
Off-piste, take great care at the moment as temperatures have been rocketing and there's a big dump of snow forecast on the 26th/27th - so there's a lot of instability out there. Try, as a start, some of the 'Pistes Naturides' in Tignes (Col de Ves or Campanules).

Yep, I can definitely recommend this place, we ate in there a couple of days ago. Outside on the terrace they have a bbq on the go with various meats, sausages etc, all served with baked potato and salad. Quite reasonable in price too. I think the inside also serves various other food, though we didn't try this. It can get VERY busy though, we queued 20 mins for our bbq food, the other counter inside which serves the other foods was queueing out of the door, there must have been at least 30 or 40 people in the queue.

Teh best thing I remember about that place from a couple of years back was the totally barking little old lady that ran it - worth a visit just for the experience (and she did a mean Croque Monsieur!). She must be about 103 by now.

Always liked Le Triffolet on the mountain - about halfway down the OK/Orange or Vert runs back down to La Daille.
Le Signal restaurant at Fornet is good if pricey...
La Fruitiere at the Daille bubble car is worth a look, too.
Perdrix Blanche in town on main street is good with wide ranging menu - lively and unstuffy.
There's one we went to often for lunch, down in town - good for dinner also, friendly etc.... may be called Pre d'Aval, but my terrible memory fails me... could find it easily if i was there.... down the Solaise area and out onto the mainstreet, head left and stay on the left hand side of main street.... it's one of the first few or so after that main roundabout....?
For off-piste (or excellent lessons) i'd recommend 'Woody' Woodward, was with Snow Fun now with Progression ski, it seems

Get the Triffolet number when you visit and you can book/reserve a place on the balcony/terrace above for maximum sun-burn and relaxation.

I'd forgotten about Triffolet, its one of the best in the whole of EK, in my book. Especially outside on a sunny day.
I'm back now and had been hoping to do Vallon de Sache, having not done it when there in January. Its looking in pretty poor condition at the moment with some large slips and horizontal fissures everywhere. The last bit before you get to Brev is very bare, although you can rejoin Sache piste which is holding up well. I wouldn't even think about it without expert guide advise though. My local friend said it may be finished for the season as the base is so unstable. Avi risk was 3-4 this week but so many slips were going off we treated it as 5 below 2400m. We were very cautious where we went off, not venturing far at all except around Grande Motte.
Its snowing today and set to cool down next week so should improve. Have a good time.

La Fruitiere and Signal were our favourites last year for good long boozy lunches. Pricey but not outrageous.

In terms of restaurants to AVOID, I nominate the Folie Douce in Val D, above La Daille. I have been there twice and both times felt mugged. Overpriced, self-service and undistinguished food and to cap it all they require half a euro to use the loo.

Forgot about that pay-per-loo..... crikey. Yup, if you're eating at the Folie douce (right next door to La Fruitiere) you'll have to find some loose change.....
NOTE:- if you've gone 'upmarket' and you're eating at La Fruitiere you get to pee for free! Just be aware, you have to take one of the marbles out of the bowl with you to show your VIP status to the toilet guard......!

FAQ
. enjoyed the morris pub and the live band. snowed for 48 hours after we arrived.took us 7 hours to get to val from geneva 
had 2 days of roaring sunshine. and the conditions were perfect on the last day. cheers.
