Poster: A snowHead

One of my skiing partners is trying to resurrect an old pair of Rossi skis.
The bases are quite white and look very dried out.
What would you suggest to remedy the problem?
(I told him just to wax them up and ski them, but he's certain that something needs to be done beforehand as the bases are too dry).
Cheers.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

There are a few options here,
you can buff with a grey type Fibertex pad
you can scrape the skis with a metal scraper before you wax
you can hot scrape over several cycles with *sharp* plastic scraper.
But, essentially, wax and ski is really the most reward for the work invested.

When noone took care of skis for long time, only thing that might (yes only might) help is stone grinding and then more then just few hot waxing cycles before he steps back on these skis. When skis are scre***d up it's very hard to get them in proper condition again. Base pores are filled with dirt and sometimes it's impossible to get that dirt our. That's why I say it's much more important to wax them regularly (not once or twice a season, but more like once or twice a week... at least) then to do edges every (few) day(s).

What he said - grind and wax a LOT may get some joy. However the basic idea is not to let the bases get burnt to start with.

Pores? What pores?

Give 'em a good clean with IPA, a wire brush and loads of elbow grease. Sharpen up the edges. Rub 'em down with a clean washing up pad and more IPA and then wax normally.
