Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Extreme Skiing DVD

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

While away on this year's trip many of the bars were showing extreme and freestyle dvd's which I found almost hypnotic. I have come home to look for one to buy but there seems to be so much choice I'm not sure where to start. Ideally, I would like something that covers freestyle, big mountain and other ridiculous things that these guys do is what I am after. It seems that Warren Miller and Teton are popular but I have no idea if this would fit the bill.

Any reccomendations on what to choose would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I picked up a warren miller boxset, 10 films for £30 when I bought it, at the showing of one of the films on the annual tour - a quick check reveals it's a bit more expensive now but stil worth considering

http://store.warrenmiller.co.uk/warren-miller-box-set-10-dvds-special-discount-172-p.asp

I still rate "Impact" as a great ski film, I really enjoyed it. If you hunt around you can also get a Greg Stump 4 film boxset for about £7, they videso are a bit older, kind of early to mid 90s, but still great skiing

Teton's Anomaly is good, and Swift Silent Deep excellent. Signatures by Sweetgrass productions also. MSP's 'In Deep' pretty decent too (great McConkey tribute at the end).

Well you certainly need the big 4 Greg Stump films: Blizzard, License to Thrill, Groove Requiem and Ptex etc. I think you can get these cheap as a box set. In Deep is amazing too.

I really like the TGR films, great skiing and a small amount of jaw dropping snowboarding too High Life is a good start. Next year I'm going to come back and watch that switch ... to the road.

Frankly, these films are great in ski bars but - a bit like dancing in ski boots and drinking Jägermeister - in your front room in front of the telly, it's just not the same rolling eyes .

Whatever you do, please don't get the new Warren Miller flicks, they're pretty woeful compared to others.

As others have said, In Deep is probably your best bet. You can get it off iTunes for 1.89!! Bargain. You can get the all of TGR's films off their site for around 15dollars in various downloadable formats.

I've also heard good things about Contrast (basically all big mountain) and Level 1's Refresh (more focused on park).

Otherwise, if you plan to buy the films:

www.skidvdstore.co.uk - hardly any stock left
www.snowmo.co.uk - limited stock too but just as cheap
http://www.freezeproshop.com/ - slightly more experience, but more stock

Thanks for all of these suggestions. Steep looks amazing and you can pick it up really. Looks like I could be spending a fortune however, it's my birthday coming up soon and I am unlikely to get a skiing trip for the end of the season so these may just quench my thirst until next winter.

Maggi - it may not be the same but at least it is part of the way there. I may just where my ski boots and sit with a bottle of jagermeister while I watch my new films.

I have also looked at the re:session dvd from TGR which looks amazing fromt he trailer so may go for that one too.

Thanks again.

So, having read this thread, I've now watched 'Steep' and also 'Swift, Silent, Deep'. Both highly recommended! Be careful though.. if you're anything like me, they'll make you suddenly find sitting in an office very depressing, and make you want to go out and ski lots of powder. If in a few years time I fall off a mountain whilst trying to ski some steep couloir, I blame this thread for starting it off.. Smile

Cliam is the best, but as mentioned, Steep is awesome too - pretty much a documentary about the history of freeride skiing.

Anyone have a lead on a good price for Signatures by Sweetgrass Productions?

skipass have it for EUR30 which seems a bit spenny for a DVD; US sites will probably be a bit pricey by the time you pay shipping etc

my vote goes for any of the TGR films, must get In Deep and Steep sounds like a missed good ones there

Also a vote for Matchsticks Seven Sunny Days, just for the awersome jump close ups in slow mo

Plus if you can get the old Helly promo DVD's they are really good and ultra real

O and my son took most of my ski porn to the Alps this season, if your reading this Bud B**stard

They are usually sold at RRP of 24-28 pounds. Best bet is to wait till they release info about their next movie and you should then be able to get it on offer. It's only 22 pounds, including shipping, from their website. It may be an idea to ask them to mark the DVD to be valued at under 10$ and as a gift.

Hi
I really like the Nuit De La Glisse series. Although not exclusively ski porn (plenty here for surfers too), the snow sequences are superb. Try this :

I haven't actually bought one since they were videos rather than DVDs rolling eyes
However if you are interested in one that also talks about and demonstrates steep techniques then (assuming it got transferred to DVD) Try "Steep Techniques" (1991) featuring Scot Schmidt . He was also in the (earlier) "The Blizzard of Aahhh's" and many others.

Signatures has to be one of the most sensitively made ski film ever - the cinematography is just perfect.

Greg Stumps films are all classics - I love Groove, partly cos I was in the speed skiing race featured, and knew the guys featured.

I'm sure it does, but I personally wouldn't classify it as an 'extreme' or 'freestyle' skiing DVD. Cause if you go down that route, then you're going to have to cite some of the Bond films etc...

So it was my birthday today and I recieved TGR Re:Session, Steep and Warren Miller's Playground. Steep came with a bonus copy of Blizzard of Arrrghs, which I last saw when I was about 14. Just waiting for the kids to go to bed tonight to endulge myself in Ski Porn. I might even put my boots and skis on.

Thanks again for all of the recommendations.
