Finally, you arrive at the Mooserwirt bar, an establishment which has the somewhat dubious reputation of selling more beer than any other bar in the Alps, and is the apres-ski starting point of choice for the thousands of Britons who descend upon the resort in the winter months.
Quote:
In Chamonix, in the French Alps, another popular destination for British skiers, the resort’s famous Chambre Neuf bar is selling vast amounts of its own answer to the Jagerbomb.
The Grenade consists of half a pint of Red Bull with two shot glasses inside — one containing Jagermeister and the other Tequila. It ranges in price from £7 to £9.
Walk into Chambre Neuf most evenings at around 6pm and you are likely to see a dozen or so Grenades set up on the bar.
The bawdy reputation of the Brits is well established there.

Martin Ebner, of the town’s Tourist Office, says that the idea that St Anton is fuelled solely by alcohol is outdated.
‘It’s just not like that,’ he insists.
‘Last year we put a stop to the concept of bar crawls and now all bars have to be closed by 4am. ‘Even if people have been drinking, that still gives them enough time to sober up before going skiing.’
Boredsurfing, simply not affordable these days. Skiing with a hangover is a hideous experience.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The idea that you can have your last drink at 4am after a whole 12 hours of drinking, and be sober by breakfast is, of course, laughable and only an Austrian could try and persuade us of that. Mr Ebner (actually it is Ebster) doesn't mention the few deaths there have been among those staggering out of the Mooserwirt and heading into the ravine! What a poor end to a holiday. It's an amazing place though - I was once taken down into the cellars and saw the whole alcohol factory in operation; teams of pourers constantly filling beer glasses, teams of barrel changers, teams of washer uppers and 30 kilometres of pipes (yes, 30 km) pumping everything from wine, jagertee, schnapps and extraordinary amounts of beer, without a pause, up to the melee above. People should definitely be made to wear helmets for this kind of activity.
I see nothing there but the standard stock article by the daily mail. This week it's on the snow next week it will be town centres, same story.

I am pleased some resorts have refused to be dragged in to the Foreign office scare tactics.

When I was at the EoSB more than one person suggested my skiing would improve for a lunchtime tipple as I was far too tense - didn't try it though
In Saalbach our two (Bulgarian) instructors told us that a 'shot' to loosen you up would help (particularly the more timid) skiers relax. We took their advice
They were very good instructors and skiers.

I don't drink on the piste very often but if I do have a beer at lunch I do feel looser in the afternoon and seem to ski better so there maybe something to having one.

why does it seem to be OK to have a few beers when skiing, when the same people (i hope) won't do it when driving! the average skier is doing 20 to 30mph and higher, if you were in a car you would be called irresponsible but on the slopes its all part of having a good time, it really hacks me off that its OK to get p*ssed on the piste and its not limited to the Brits abroad
You know it makes sense.

Yeah too right (get them an orange cordial or schiwasser)
Seriously my saddest ski moment todate was seeing a father in shock and a mother howl in pain as her child (who had just been hit at speed on a busy blue slope) lay lifeless on the piste.

clarky999, Actually it was Georgi and 'George'. Georgi was the ex (Russian) special services guy. short stocky and hard as bloody nails! (great guy with a great sense of humour).
This video is the two of them showing us how it should be done. Georgi is in front.

Glad you had fun with them, they're awesome guys with cracking banter!

1) Dunno about your 'average' skier, most of the folks I see are travelling MUCH more slowly than that.
2) Having 'a few beers' is not the same as getting'p*ssed'.
3) Being hit by a car even at low speed is MUCH more damaging to the body than being hit by another human being.
4) There are always idiots, but not every skier who has a beer at lunchtime is a drunk.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

clarky999, and a great repertoire of very rude jokes.
Axsman, felt like a rant, agree not everyone is p*ssed, and the are probably more sober skiers than those that have had a drink.
Its hard to judge speed on the slopes, i have a GPS thing and it surprised me and the 72 year old who was skiing with me how fast we actually went, our average was below 10mph but our top speed was over 30 and we weren't in our opinion pushing it.
Agree its not as bad as a car, I was using it in terms of being responsible. But it still hurts and can result in broken bits
Agree there are always idiots and they don't always need to have had a drink

radar, Yes my GPS recorded an average of around 15kph and a top speed of 57kph in Meribel the week before last, and I'm certainly not a fast skier. However there were far more people going much slower than that most of the time. My guess is the average skier probably does less than 20 mph most of the time.
As you say the real idiots are not necessarily those who have a had 'a few beers' but those who drunk or sober, tear down greens and blues full of beginners at speeds that are inappropriate for the conditions or their ability. Funnily enough IME these tend to be (mostly) male and under 25, now there's a surprise!

Hope I don't get too much hate mail from some of the pedantic and presumably PC socialist Gaurdianistas on here but I read the D Mail and regarding the article at the top - I've been there, seen it, done it, and I have to say I'm not sure that it's in any way inaccurate.

Example of someone deciding what the story is and then trawling for stuff to support their point of view. Rubbish journalism.

Lizzard, In your link the journalist (perhaps another?) is simply following up on the FCO campaign and asking for information to assess whether it was based on fact or exaggeration. Where's the rubbish in that approach?

A national disgrace. Can't we win at ANYTHING?
Yes British standards are dropping, the Russians are more agressive too. Gone are the days when you could always rely on Brits getting tanked up and getting all fisticuffs - just what is the world coming to?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I blame the Youf.
In Ischgl we drank* the neighbouring table of cloggies well under it!
*Said drinking occurring AFTER the days skiing, no small children, families or sober people were injured during or after this event.
