 Poster: A snowHead

Last day of holiday, busy run, two French girls plough into the back of me and land on top of me. I get up, check they're ok and ski off........I then discover I can't lift my arm above my shoulder and my shoulder's in great pain. It's still in pain.
Can anyone speculate what sort of mischief I've done before I go to the GP who'll probably say something along the lines of, 'monitor it for a week and come back if it's not healing' sort of nonsense?
This is a nuisance and waiting ages to access healthcare is probably going to be a greater nuisance so is there anyone out there who might have an inkling of what might have happened please do drop a line!

It's a tad unreasonable to complain in anticipation of delays in accessing healthcare when you have created the first delay by not going to see your GP. You never know, your GP might actually be rather good at shoulder injuries...  .

I agree with laundryman, There are stretch excersises you can do, I have had this injury it is very painful. I had alot of physio for it, basically your tendons are being pinched between the bones and because they are inflamed its even worst. I found ice packs helped in the first instance and ibubrofen or diclofenic. Wish you a speedy recovery.

Which movements hurt? (Taking arm sideways, forwards, backwards, putting hand in small of back, turning arm outwards with elbow tucked into your side?)
Is it tender (hurts when you press) anywhere?
Is there pain where the girls hit, or is there pain because you put your arm out to save yourself?

Or is there pain because you didn't get their phone numbers?
What are you like? You have a shoulder pain and loss of movement; you don't know what it is exactly; you don't know what to do about it; you ask a bunch of unknowns on an internet forum for diagnosis and treatment; you have GP who has spent years in training who may well have the answers . 
Pick up the phone with your good arm and phone for an appointment.

Did left shoulder last year , c doctor but book some physio . Three weeks with three simple excersises ( elastic bands jammed in a door then pulling ) pain soon went , only problem had to wait four months on nhs . It's worth paying to have it sorted sooner !!.
And same as all above , it's one of my many fantasies to have two French Women ( although am not fussy about origin ) lying on top of me !!!!

In my non expert opinion it sounds like an injury I had playing rugby where I tore my AC joint which attached the shoulder to the collar bone. It sounds worse than it is it is normally cured by a couple of weeks rest and the only side effect is a lump on the top of your shoulder. This is just a guess but sounds pretty similar to my injury. I hope that it didn't ruin your skiing.

I hurt my shoulder falling of my bike a few years ago. Sounds similar - couldn't lift my arm up at all at first.
After a week went to the walk in service at the hospital they gave it a look and as nothing was broken they just told me to rest it.
Took a long time to get right though, tried cycling after 6 weeks and still got twinges, but it's fine now.

It may be ligament, but it could rather, or also be a muscle tear (very sharp and localised pain) Does it also hurt if someone else raises your arm for you, or only if you raise it under its own power, so to speak?

kevin mcclean, The technical medical term for your injury is "Hurty Shoulder" it can be fixed with large doses of Diclofenac and Whisky.

It looks like you have dislocated your shoulder, so drink a bottle of whisky, then ram your shoulder against a wall to pop it back in, maybe twice just in case it was not dislocated the first time
|

Diclofenac is very hard on the stomach. There are much better NSAIDs. But the ones that work are usually on prescription only.

I had a similar injury some years ago. I did it in what was otherwise a minor (non skiing) accident. Your rotator cuff tendon joins onto the top of your arm and is about 35mm wide at the join. I had detached all but 5mm of the tendon at the join.
Cortizone took the pain away for a month but the second jab didn't work at all. I was lucky to have Pru Health cover. I had an arthogram (sp?) which is magnetic fluid injected into the shoulder joint then into a cat scanner for a 3D scan of the shoulder. This found the problem. The op was carried out the following week and involved them going in through my deltoid muscle, with a camera looking in from the back of my arm. They screwed 4 fixings into my arm, cut a slot below these fixings and inserted the tendon into the slot. The tendon was then wired in place to the 4 fixings.
Recovery was my arm strapped to my body for 3 months then 3 months of creeping my hand up walls to stretch the 'lat' muscles under my arm and physio to laser the tendon, to get more blood going through it. After that it was 6 months of traditional physio to rebuild muscle around the shoulder (this disappears when you stop using your arm normally).
The consultant said had I ripped off the remaining bit of tendon, the repair would have been much more difficult and less likely to succeed.
Because you have one or two veins the thickness of a hair, running through tendons, the repair process is incredibly slow. If, like me, you have detached some of the tendon, it will not re-attach itself and if the tear has broken blood vessels, the tendon may die. My advice is to get referred to a specialist as quickly as possible.

I wonder what the point is in starting a thread called "What injury have I sustained?" and then not even appearing to bother to keep an eye on the answers (and possible helpful diagnostice questions) ?

Professional opinion...
See your Dr; you probably need an xray to rule out bony injury but, more importantly, an ultrasound scan to rule out ligament or "rotator cuff" tendon injury. Tendons don't heal themselves..

Sounds like same problem as me - shoulder rammed up into socket leading to impingement of the tendon. Go to a good chiropractor.
It does take a while to get sorted.

This all reminds me of an old joke...
A bloke walks into a herbal chemist and asks for 1kg of powdered White Rhino horn. The chemist says "Crikey mate, 1kg? do you know its the most powerful aphrodisiac know to science?". The customer explains that he has two French girls coming over for the weekend, with a wink.
The chemist gets the message and explains that the chap should start on Friday lunchtime, taking 100g per hour and he should then be like Nelson's Column all weekend.

Whatever you do, don't let your mates try and pop it back in after a few beers.
I had a nasty fall with the assistance of my 25-stone American friend, Wild Bill, after rather a lot of drinking. It was a bit ow, and there was a rather bright flash as I hit the ground, but we carried on drinking, went out on the tiles, and other than avoiding picking up drinks with my right arm had an all-round good time.
The next morning I woke up and couldn't move my arm, well I could, but it really hurt quite a lot. Luckily I had planned ahead and wasn't alone in my bed, but it's always hard explaining to a girl that you need a hand to get dressed.
Off I went to the GP who thought I'd broken my collar bone. Now here's the good bit - get them to phone ahead to A&E and give you a little note that says you need X-raying. That way you don't have to queue up with the kids with saucepans on their heads and stuff.
After one x-ray they were all set for packing me home with paracetamol and ibruprofen, the other angle revealed a delightful crack in the top of the ball in my shoulder. They seemed genuinely astounded I hadn't snapped the end off, just put a crack in the top, and then sent me home with a sling, paracetamol and ibruprofen 
Anyway, the moral of the story is go and see a doctor, then go and see somebody with an X-ray. Broken bones get you a lot more sympathy than muscle injuries.
