Nothing comes close to Austrian ORF tv for awful commentating. The commentators usually describe the action in great detail, but this is merely describing what we can see for ourselves; '... x is ready at the starting gate... Wearing his/her red/blue/white national racing suit...final adjustment of goggles, round the first gate.. tight on the second gate.. Bla bla bla...'. Every female competitor is 'sehr sympatisch' and we get to know about their bodies ('tall and thin' / 'athletic' etc) and even their hair and eye colour, plus a cutaway to mamma and pappa waiting in the finish area . But little analysis of how they are skiing, what makes them a top-5 competitor, where the race was won or lost. Every sud-tyroler is an honorary Austrian if they do well, but merely another struggling Italian if they don't.

I have to agree here - last time I watched ORF I couldn't tell a word they were saying.

Good news. I am away for a month in the Three Valleys so this really is my last observation on this topic which seems to have mutated somewhat from the original post of, "BBC verses Eurosport coverage."
Dave Ryding may well be the best UK skier - in slalom and he is turning in good performances in the World Cup; good, but not fantastic though. That's one person in one discipline. It strikes me that the British approach to identifying and training world class skiers must be fundamentally floored otherwise we would be able to provide a team capable of good performances across all the alpine disciplines. I accept skiing is not a cheap sport, but if you want to achieve something badly enough you find a way. I speak from my gymnastics experience (See above). Why is it that, if you are indeed such a fantastic coach John, you are not training the British skiers to a successful competitive level? Please, please don't tell me they don't pay you enough, that would be really sad. As I have said I would love to see some ace British skiers in the Alpine events there most surely be some potential out there that is not being identified/picked up. That suggests to me that there judgement criteria may be faulty. Having also watched several Europa Cup downhills, Super G and G events in Meribel it strikes me that pure courage should be high on the list of requirements. Find a young man with great courage and teach him to ski.........maybe.
I was not an Olympian I was a competent National gymnast that competed on what was then called the Olympic 6 (Floor, Vault, Pommel Horse, Rings, Parallel Bars and High Bar) and that was as part of a great team of men that supported each other all the way. I have seen a fair amount of the Paralympics skiers in Meribel a few times over the years. I am full of admiration for their achievements believe me, but it does make me feel a bit uncomfortable watching them, although I can't say why. One man in our gymnastics team broke his neck and was paralysed from the neck down about 45 years ago following an accident in the gymnasium and maybe it is a hangover from that life changing event for him. He cannot move anything other than his head. He is still alive, but has spent the bulk of his life in a motorised wheelchair.
On the up side I have to say that the commentary on the ladies slalom yesterday was more prudent and informative than has been the case in the past so thanks for that. I at least appreciated the moderation and, to my mind, it improved the show no end. I will watch Dave Ryding today and I hope he goes well. I really do wish him luck.

Very good question..... I guess tennis was the days priority, not sure why it wasn't on the Eurosport Player..... Shame to miss Dave Rydings first run.

Very poor coverage of the night slalom this evening; Dave Ryding's second run was among several not covered. One bonus was Nick Fellows was missing from the microphone!
