Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zakopane Poland 27th Feb

Here's a quick report...

Landed in Krakow - first time I've landed into an airport and all the countryside is blanketed in white - fantastic feeling.
Picked up the hire car and was told that we didn't need snow chains - to quote - "its a main road to Zakopane - we keep it clear!"
After a boozy night in Krakow we set off for Zakopane. Temperature is showing -10 and there are light flurries of snow but yes the roads are clear of snow - but not of traffic. Major tailbacks leaving the mountains (Sunday) and then we get caught in a jam - twice. Same reason each time was a car accident with a bus... eeek.... Condition of the roads is pretty dire - potholes all over the place.
Anyway eventually get to hotel and chill out - lots of snow everywhere and the mountains are beautiful. Zakopane is a pretty town, with lots going on. Very much focused on domestic market - didn't really hear any foreign voices the whole weekend. Lots of shops - very cheap skis, boots and jackets - all the top brands at knockdown prices. Not really much in way of snowboards unfortunately - all focused on skiers...
Monday - checked out some estate agents and in the afternoon we finally got onto the slopes! Discovered that the main funicular requires booking in advance otherwise can wait couple of hours to buy an immediate ticket. Also looks like it only has black runs from the top - so we decided to go for the smaller lift in town. And small it was! One blue run with a middle red section. However the snow was falling and the conditions were good so we had lots of fun.
The region is made up of individual ski tows dotted around the place and in the end we couldn't be bothered driving around for skiing - we wanted to have a chill out weekend so didn't explore any of the other tows...

Conclusion - fantastic place for a break - food and drink was amazingly good value. Would say not to bother with the 'top end' hotels as they were expensive for what they were - next time would stay somewhere cheaper. Fantastic place to buy gear... and can't wait to go back in the summer for some walking in the mountains. Probably not going to buy any property/land there - but we are keen to explore a bit more just over the border in Slovakia. There doesn't seem to be a drive to link up any of the runs to create a resort as such - its a National Park which is beautiful but then seeing some of the development going on in the valley floor it seems like the policy isn't very consistent! If anyone is thinking of going that way and want some specifics then ask away!
