Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lenses for flat light - yellow or orange?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I (perhaps foolishly) lent my Adidas Yodai goggles to a friend for his recent ski trip, and they have been returned to me with a huge crack in them! He has kindly offered to pay for a new lens for me, but I want to make sure I get the replacement right. They were previously an orange lens, for flat light days. I also have a dark lens for brighter days, so I'm just looking for a lens that will make the most difference in flat light.

My question is this; will an orange or a yellow lens be the best option for flat light? I don't know anywhere that has them in stock so I can't really do a comparison.

My Adidas Yodai lenses for flat light are orange - if you scroll to the bottom of this page http://www.vision3k.com/brands/adidas-ski-goggles/yodai-a133.asp you can see the light absorption for the different lenses. Yellow will let in even more light but I don't think they give very much protection. Snow and Rock should stock them if there's one near you and you want to check them out.

cathy, thanks, for some reason I didn't even think of S&R. I just called them and they only have yellow lenses in stock. That's ok because I can take my orange ones down there and have a bit of a comparison. I'll be honest, I'm not sure if I like the idea of yellow lenses. But having never tried them before I guess that's pretty much why I started this thread!

Dav, I'd be interested to hear back what you think of the yellow lenses - although I guess until you're actually out there skiing in flat light it's a bit difficult to tell! But my orange ones are a bit scratched & I'm just wondering whether it's worth trying out the yellow.

Is there a difference between lenses for flat light (when you can see a long way, but can not see any detail at all on the surface of the snow; moguls disappear) and lenses for low vis/fog (when you're lucky if you can see the next piste marker)? I've got one pair I wear for everything, but although I don't usually bother going out if the light is too grim I wouldn't mind treating myself to a fancy new pair if it would make a big difference.

pam w, going just on the manufacturer's blurb for my goggles lenses; both yellow and orange lenses are described as "better vision in fog and diffuse light, brightening effect". It doesn't really distinguish between the two colours except to say that the yellow lenses seem to allow more light in than the orange ones. None of the other lens options seem to be designed for flat light/fog so I guess it's just a choice between these two.

IMHO yellow goggles for flat light, rose / orange sunnies for everything else.

Actually, I don't think any of them help much in really thick fog - though that doesn't stop people spending their inheritance on them.

Totally agree, goggles aint much better than sunnies, and if its that bad, but not snowing, then nothing is best.. (bar contacts) for me.

I've found that rose tints work best for me in flat light. It's marginal, but every little helps.

Hope its Hi-Yellow, I've just spent £52 to replace the persimon ones in a pair of Oakleys. I am absolutely useless in flat light, hope these help.

Not sure about skiing but for flat light when shooting I'll go with orange every time
