Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi All,
I recently treated myself to skis I spotted in a charity shop, Atomic Beta Carv 8.18 same length as the X Wings I borrow from the snowdome and much better condition!
Anyway took them out for a play and had great fun but just wondered if there was anything beyond drying them out I needed to do to look after them either after every outing or every few outings?
Thanks
David

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

davkt, that's a nice 2002-era ice ski. Keep 'em sharp.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yep even a low hours skier like me could tell the difference decent edges over the rounded off snowdome hire skis made so will be keeping em nice and sharp! Knew nothing about em when I bought em other than they were the same length as the ones the Snowdome lent me to learn on and look more or less the same shape! Got them for a price that meant it wouldn't matter if they were only fit to turn into runners for a sledge for the kids but first time out they seem far nicer to ski on than the Snowdome loan stock, better, more precise turns, and somehow just more fun.

Davkt, get yourself over to www.skituning.co.uk (spyderjon on this sites web) and have a read. Tuning and waxing your own ski's is easy and satisfying and far cheaper in the long run than paying a shop to do themh

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ski tuning is not hard and as you say madmole much cheaper than paying ever time but the outlay for all the equipment isn't cheap before you set off on this road have a think as to how often you will actually tune your skis!!!
You will need wax and an iron (a small old travel iron is fine you don't need to buy a special ski waxing one) but be careful about the settings, you don't want the iron to be to to hot as it will burn your bases! and a scraper
You will need some files/dimond files an edge guide. moonflex are the new equivelent to dimond files and very good!!
As madmole says skituning.co.uk is a good place to start!

Cool,
Will probably go do one of spyderjohn's tuning courses to learn how to do it properly as it looks very interesting!
In the meantime is there anything other than drying everything out to do after every use?

davkt, until you do the course you could think about getting some Zardoz Not Wax, one of of the snow dome ski shops will have it, that way you will still be able to slide . Highly recommend the course with Spyderjon

Yep, spyderjon classes, well worth every penny. Just save the pocket money before you go cos I doubt you will come away without buying some kit. Also reccomend a campbell balance and binding check while your there

Agree totally -The balancing process provides so much foundation and knowledge to open up a future of more informed, rewarding skiing: It made a huge difference.
