The responses to the £1000 to do a holiday thread prompted my memory to this.
2 Years ago I went on a trip and there was a bunch of Bachelor boy's 25-30ish, all of them took a £1000 spends, by the end of the week they had all spent up and had to draw some cash on the visa cards. Two of the guys didn't even get their gear on until day 3, they were that worst for wear. Now the £1000 was all spending money we were half board and lift passes were pre paid, so all that had to be paid for was lunch and Beer.
I personally have never got anywhere near this and I think it is an obscene amount, but these guys were all hard working professionals from all walk's of life and were having a proper blow out, no wifes to be answerable to and no kids to be responsible for. So what they spend and how they choose to spend it is entirely their business.
Reckon my average spend on Lunch and all things Apres is somewhere in the region of £400 per week, if the wifes with me this will probably drop to £600 for both of us and in my experience that is about the average, at least with the company I keep.
So the question is any out there managed to blow a grand on Lunch & Beer Money.

For lunch and beer I usually spend £350 - £400 too.
Met a group of lads that had spent £1000.00 a few years ago too.

Despite going on a boozy trip last week, I only managed to get through €200
On Lads drinking weekends at various beer festivals around Europe I usually budget on £100 to £150 a day (which could end up being £1000 in 7 days). The trouble is, we can only sustain that level for a couple of days, not a week.
To get through £1000 in a week - that is seriously impressive.

I could easily get through £1000 in a week, if I had it in the first place. My first few days back in Saalbach for the Xmas holidays (when I was trying to not spend all my money) before I started work I struggled to keep my spending down to much less than 60-80 euros a night, and that was with seasonaire/worker discounts etc. It's just so easy to keep saying yes! Gotta love Bauers

I've spent that much in a week but that included accommodation, flights, lift pass (7 days) two nights hotel stops in Geneva, eating out every night, a day with a guide and I bought a transceiver, shovel and probe. So tbh £1000 wasn't too bad. These days I seem to be able to do a season for the cost of some peoples week long trip!

Isn't £1000 good for about 19 or 20 pints a day?

For dinner on the mountain and drinks in the evening I take the equivalent of £150 but aim to spend half that. Even with the rubbish exchange rate I came home with €65 last season.. But I am an extreme lightweight when it comes to drinking.

I quite simply could not spend that much on food & drink, unless I was finding a restaurant where a meal would set you back over £100.
If you are spending £50 per evening meal (which would be more than I ever have), that still leaves around £600 for the week to get through on booze, and I would pass out well before I got through £50 in a night, never mind the best part of £100.
Yes, I know - I'm a light weight

Kel, I managed it on a five day trip. Flew in to Vegas and drove up to Brian Head for two days skiing in Utah and then went back to Las Vegas for 3 nights to see a fight and lost a grand on the roulette. Worst thing is I don't even gamble I was a right muppet, just got sucked into the whole thing!
Two of my friends each tipped a Barman £500 each in Garfs in Whistler in one night so easily went over the grand for the week. They were so waaaasted they didn't even realise they had done it till the next day. It sounds really OTT and obnoxius and I could understand if it if they were rich but they aren't they just lost the plot and didn't know what they were doing. The barman refused to take it but they got so Arsey with him he just gave in!. However every cloud....he left Garfs and went to run Mo Jos and we never queued or ever paid for a drink when we went back there.

That really is a lot of money for beer... are you quite sure that the only powder they were experiencing that week was that falling from the sky?

Kel, if I had that kind of money I could easily do it in a week. I can drink like that (and do on my grand prix and festival trips) but when I want to be up in the morning to ski I tend to go a bit easier maybe just one or 2 nights like that.

Gsyfreerider, yep, have done that exact same Vegas / Brian Head gig. Sorry to out do you but two of us blew over $5,000 in three days and never actually made it to the Ricky Hatton fight because we were badly delayed by snow around Cedar City. Brian Head was OK but not worth the drive. Cedar Breaks was worth a look though.
Anyway, wherever you are, a grand goes nowhere.

If we had to pay for dinner every night then yes easy - but we were in a chalet so the dinner/ wine/ port was covered.
Thinking about it - how bloody vulgar, spending £1k on booze in a week!? Madness.

Nadenoodlee, why is it vulgar to spend that much on booze in a week?
|
|
|
|
|
|
hyweljenkins, vulgar to talk about it given the current suffering of people in the world i.e Haiti, no bloody water and i'm spending £11 on pineapple juice and thinking its ok? and (granted it was in the Guardian) this country when there are people who have to decide whether to eat or have the heating on.
It's just my opinion, I'm as guilty as everyone else.

Nadenoodlee, presumably you're not going away this year and will, instead, be giving the money to DEC?
Kel's friends may well have donated £10,000 to charities that year.

hyweljenkins, oh sweet moses calm down man. Talking about spending £1k on booze is vulgar end of. Whether you give up all your money and join a convent is not the point, it's just not very sensitive in MY opinion.
I ADMITTED that I am guilty of it, im not suggesting we all throw our ski funds into a big Haiti-bound pot! I just think we lose a bit of perspective on holiday £1k each on booze? 15.90euro jacket potatoes (granted there was some smoked salmon) but come on - would you pay that at home?
That was my point - you just went off on a band wagon.

Managed it in a day. On a new boiler
Ski holidays should certainly be cheaper than boilers - they don't last nearly as long.

Nadenoodlee, I didn't go off on a band-wagon at all. You were criticising people's spending habits, and your original statement of "how bloody vulgar" is clearly that, without knowing the full facts. Making that criticism, IMO, is more vulgar than the act of spending the money.
Here endeth the lesson. Now, put the kettle on, woman, and bring me my newspaper.

With four kids aged 13-18, a grand doesn't cover lunches and hot chocolats even in Italy. We take £1k in cash and usually have to draw out more.

£1000? So what? Don't see this as anyones business but those who spent it. You can spend considerably more that on a single bottle of plonk in many resorts......

Boredsurfing, for this thread you are meant to blow £1,000 min. just for socialising/hanging out/eating - absolutely no skiing relevant expenses like lift pass or hotel allowed as far as I understand it

I don't think they did, but they kept feeding the pool table with €2 for the kids that were in the hotel and buying them the odd sneaky beer. That's the kind of guy's they are.
