Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

"Specialist" Boot Fitter or Snow and Rock with the option to try out new boots at Hemel?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Ok, so, after 10 years of snowboarding, I am making inroads back into skiing this year - so that I can ski with my 4 year old as he progresses.

I've done 2 weeks of skiing before - ESF lessons for 6 mornings each trip - which got me to the point where I remember being proud of skiing a few reds and the 'black' Luc Alphand run in Serre Chevalier (thou if IIRC this was a flattering black and was in good condition when I came down it). I can't imagine my 'technique' would have been anything to write home about - this feeling being endorsed when I got back on a pair of skis at Hemel recently - I was a complete kook!

Now, I'm persuading myself to purchase a set of boots - can't face someone elses sweaty seconds, and from having several pairs of my own snowboards boots, I recognise the benefit of having the consistency when it comes to boots - ie. they fit your feet, you don't have to spend the first day or two adjusting them interminably, you get used to skiing in one boot so there is one less variable impeding progression etc.

(actually, I'm trying to justify it there - the reality is I've got new kit hunger and just feel a necessity to purchase some new kit - ahem! rolling eyes )

So, lots of recommendations for CEM and others on here (i.e Specialists) - (i also have a friend who has visited CEM this year, and if he can sort out comfortable boots for my excessively flat footed friend I'm sure he can sort out boots for anyone).

However, do people think this is better OR go to Snow and Rock at Hemel and use the try before you buy option...

Screw trying before you by get to a fitter and let them do their thing, it is the only way. Anybody that tells you different might be happy (matter of perspective and perception of what is actually possible.) but has never had properly fitted boots or saw a bad fitter.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Richie_S, I agree fully with SMALLZOOKEEPER.
Before the boots have been fitted to your feet, you're not going to find out anything. Try before you buy works for skis, but not boots.

Richie_S, without doubt, anything other than going to see a specialist boot fitter is taking a chance (which may well pay off for those who have no great technical skiing aspirations and know they've been issued with EU standard feet and don't tend to have a problem with boots). CEM's not far away for you and will be well worth a visit.

One is friendly saying used as a greeting the other is a highly seasoned pork sausage.

Thanks for the posts. I'm inclined to agree. Even trying on boots I don't think I'm experienced enough to know what good feels like...
