i know it's going to cost a packet, considering waiting and booking last minute, {or spend the week at ChillfactorE} but wondering of any availability, b&b, chalet, apartment, {or any other suggestions welcome} etc in a smaller resort? or large??
must have ski school {not for me, i'm beyond help}
and be snow sure.

trebor-trix, not sure last minute will work well at half term - things are very, very, booked up already. Is half term essential? The Easter holidays would give you more options. And I bet you're not beyond help.

The only way I could afford to take my kids at half term was to book a studio apartment, you can get them far cheaper if you book direct and drive down. That way we could do it for a quarter of the tour operators rip off prices. If you dont want to drive the biggest problem you'll have is getting there. Chances are all the flights and trains were booked up for half term months ago.
Good luck

I was looking through all the Les Saisies agencies and private letting sites before Christmas, on behalf of a friend, and could find absolutely nothing other than some really badly located properties. I was surprised, I must admit, to find everything so fully booked so early.

You'll need to Register first of course.

trebor-trix, We're driving down to the Pyrenees and staying in a resort less known to Brits, so hopefully it will be reasonably quiet both in resort and on the drive down.
You could try http://www.skinspired.co.uk/ for accommodation and they run the British ski school there too. The accommodation prices include lift passes which helps a bit.

I realise this advise is no good for someone wanting to go this February, but I find it's much better to book well in advance if you want to go skiing during half term week. If you leave it to the last minute you'll have very little choice, and like you say it'll cost a packet.
Experience tells me that if you book some time within the next few months for Feb 2011 you'll save a whole lot of money and have a whole lot more choice.

beyond help = been skiing on & off for years, far too many bad habits
thanks all for the responses
might consider easter, have to look at dates {do the french easter school holidays mimic ours?} or xmas / new year
i drive for a living, so driving to the alps....no thanks much rather pay extra and be a passenger {consider a hire car from local airport though}
next easter, friends have an apartment, which unfortunatley they have let out this year

Check the Esprit Ski offers section. They have some very good 1 adult + 1 child deals.

trebor-trix, I don't think you'd have a problem finding a good apartment (or a package) for Easter - especially if you go the first week - it's heaps less busy than half term and flights will be less expensive, though worth booking asap.

trebor-trix, We are advertising a studio apartment near to La Clusaz for somebody who has only just started renting out their apartment, as such it is relatively cheap (£65 per night). They have availability from Sunday 14th to Saturday 20th February. Cheapest flights from the North West are Saturday to Saturday flights from Liverpool to Grenoble with Ryanair. The basic cost of flights (assumes you are taking hand luggage and no equipment) is £228 return, flights are evening flights so it gives you most of Saturday 20th to ski. You would need to book a room for Saturday 13th but plenty of motels available around Grenoble or Annecy for £30ish. A small car to hire for the week starts at £155, you will need to pay more for protected CDW etc.
You can see more details of the studio here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300384659668&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT.
If you want any more information send me a Personal Message or contact me via the advert.

david@mediacopy, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think the British half term coincides with that for the south west of France, as it did last year. Last year in St Lary we queued for something like 3 hours to buy our lift passes and my kids typically queued 45 minutes each time they needed the drag lift on the nursery slopes. The queue for the bus or gondola back down to the village was up to 95 minutes. The locals said it was the best snow they had had for 50 years, the sun shone the whole time, the (great) food was cheaper than Italy or Austria and the piste bashers were out to prove they could outgroom any Italian or US resort, so it was still a great holiday. And you are right, there were only two other Brit families in the whole resort that week.
