Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

hello, am new to snowheads.
I am in walton on thames in surrey and want to start a ski club for 50's/60's skiers who like me find it difficult to find friends still wanting to ski.
I am hoping to ski last week in Feb or 1st week in march if there are any folk of my age wanting to get togther. snowHead

skichicky, welcome to snowheads. I'm an OAP skier but don't live in Surrey..... have an apartment out in a ski resort where I have persuaded many of my friends that they're not too old to ski, after all.

You might like to consider joining something like a Ski Club of Great Britain holiday - they do them for various standards of skiers, and types of skiing. I haven't been on one but I've "heard" that the average age of those who take part is - well - not exactly young!

I'd also not be too bothered about having some younger people about. If you are fairly fit and keen to improve your skiing (on the grounds that only an excellent technique will enable you to keep going for another quarter of a century) you'd probably enjoy one of the specialist ski courses run by companies such as Inspired to Ski.

I would be interested in an older based ski group too.
I am over 50 (just) and still try to go to Austria regularly, mainly short breaks as my knees give in after 4 days !!
Most of my friends do not ski so a group would be good.

I regularly try do weeks for older skiers, (being an older instructor) but have found the problem is that they are so widely dispersed that it's impossible to get the word out to sufficient numbers. Sad I've tried to contact Saga about offering specialised holidays, but they did not bother to reply!

immer schuss, If your knees are packing up it could be because you're not standing in a balanced position on your skis and thus loading your knees more than you should.

Obviously, as I am currently 57 years young myself, this is an area that I am interested in working in for the future!

skichicky, I come from Surrey (Dorking), but as I no longer live there I don't suppose it counts! My brother is still there (Tadworth), but like pam w, he has a ski apartment and heads off there whenever he can. Sad

Thanks for that,I think you are right and I am having lessons to brush up technique next week when I go.

I also tend to ski quite fast so that does not help either.

This older ski group thing sounds great but I am in the Midlands although travel is no problem occasionally.

I am not far from MK snowdome.

thank you for all the replies, thats extremely kind.
I do understand that lots of people give up in their 50's all my ski mates more or less have done so.
I have done snow coach alone, but even so the ski trailers are all young and ski so fast, I am a 34 years skier but prefer a leisurly approach now I am over six o and its the evening too, would prefer to apres ski with my own age group. hopefully some thing will turn up!

hi Mags and all oldies ,
Well I didn't start skiing until I was 53 back in 1989 and I am still going . These days I hunt around for the free lift passes so it's off to Alpe d'Heuz next week . I do occasionally bump into other oldboys and girls but it would be good to find a group or even one or two like minded and like bodied skiers . I don't enjoy skiing solo very much now , don't mind of course skiing with youngsters of 40 - 50 but not everyone wants a granddad along , for a start you have to shout and wave your arms about a lot .
I did hear of the over the hill club and two big senior clubs in the USA and some in Canada .
I come from Sussex , next door to Surrey . Any polite remarks or support welcomed .

My husband and I are early 60s and keen skiers living in Sutton. We have three trips booked for the 2013 season (Zermatt/Chamonix/Zermatt) so are not looking to do anything more this season but remember us for 2014! I see someone has mentioned Ski Club holidays (Freshtracks). We have done three trips for the wrinklies - I think the Ski Club call them Peak Experience. They have been a bit "curate's egg" but, in general, we would recommend them. There have been a number of solo skiers on these trips and a very positive aspect has been the social side.

Good luck in getting a group together - it is certainly something we would be interested in another time.

Very Happy

I am 60 , male , live in Birmingham and always looking for a ski , self employed so fairly flexible with last min deals.
I was trying to put a group together for Jan 5 th , £ 299.00 inc meals and flights to either Alpe d`Huez or Serre Chevalier , but there are only 2 of us interested , there are 5 flight seats left at the moment from gatwick.
The following week they have at a similar price , Alpe d`Huez , Serre Chevalier or Les Menuires, the company is skibound , ensuite rooms , fairly basic but clean and close to the lifts , food with wine ok .
it would be great to get an older group together for this, one advantage is you can pay the company direct so you do not need to send money to unknowns.
I have never been to Zermatt , so I would be up for that , also fancy skiing Argentiere , Chamonix again. ian 07803907666

skichicky, Don't give up, there are many here in your age range, me included . . . who still slide regularly and some of us still like to push the envelope a bit. More and more of us are singletons and as you can see the market is being addressed . . . and then there are always the snowHead bashes where many are single and with variable skills and or skiing desires.

At 52 greeny33, you are a spring chicken. I'm off to Austria (Warth, intending to ski at Lech using the new link) 11 - 18 January. I am 56 and also going is Doug who is, ahem, rather older than I am.
We are flying Manchester - Friedrichshafen then hire car to Warth. Not looked for accommodation yet but probably self catering. I am 58 and in my 11th year of skiing. I am about advanced intermediate standard - happy on blacks and bumps but still learning in powder. Usually ski on my own. I will be in Lauterbrunnen last week in January if any other senior skiers would like to meet up and would be keen to join any trips in the future. Based in North Wales. I can speak fairly good French and a smattering of German.

We are off to Mongenerve on Jan 11 th 2014 , 2 aged 61 , one late 50`s , , there is still a twin room left if you want to join us .

Great deal , £349.00 inc flights , transfer and half board. 2 of us plan to do a bit of off piste . Man and Gatwick flights. see post for details

Most of the snowhead trips have a good share of over 50`s on them so there is no need to stop skiing just because all your ski mates give up.
