Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lost skier with mobile phone (but exhausted minutes) located by 'triangulation'

A lost skier in Revelstoke, British Columbia, who ducked a rope to ski the back-country, has been saved by the signal from her mobile phone. She had run out of minutes but was able to use a free 911 service.

The heli rescue team worked with the phone company to triangulate her signal, but this was significantly less accurate than GPS locating and did not fully address the challenge.

This report from Revelstoke Times Review.

Quote:
Relaying messages back and forth, they eventually worked out where the skier was located by having her direct the helicopter towards her. Unfortunately, they ran out of time. Due to darkness, the helicopter had to turn back, and the skier hunkered down for a cold night alone on the mountain.

The skier concerned enjoyed a free rescue - the local authorities have no mechanism to charge for it (which I think is the case in the UK, even for heli rescues on mountains).

Anyone care to comment on this case, the technicalities, etc.?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Interesting that the triangulation didn't work well.
The Met Police (and their helicopters) have the ability to triangulate a mobile phone very accurately in London once permission has been obtained. (Obviously the greater amount of masts the greater the accuracy of the trig.)

How much does a basic GPS cost? Just something which will give you lat long coordinates? Can't be that expensive, and they seem small enough to slip into a pocket nevermind a pack. Can't see any reason why not to have one if you're ducking ropes to hit the back country.
