Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Belle Plagne

We are a big group going to Belle Plagne with Esprit ski (none of us have ever been), one of the girls in the group is a very nervous and timid skier, so much so that she and her husband are considering pulling out.
Are there any gentle, easy motorway type pistes to bolster her frail confidence , and yes, she will be taking lessons.
Any advice will be appreciated
Happy 2010
Nick

bluebull, I went to Belle Plagne in 2008. La Plagne as a whole is full of gentle, wide blues; it's an ideal resort to learn in or for a second-week skier to progress. Our group had 3 or 4 second-weekers amongst it and they all said that the terrain was perfect for them, as it was not too challenging.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

bluebull, Belle Plagne is perfect for someone like that - instructors have even been known to use the path through the village (quiet wide and very gentle with NO vehicle traffic (underground)) to start people off, then walking into apartment blocks and taking the elevator to an upper level, walking out on that level and going round again.

as long as she's vaguely sporty / outdoorsy she'll have a great time - if she's a wet blanket then she'd be better off staying at home...

Don't know where you are staying but if she is really timid I would advise against the 1st run being down to Bellecote. It's quite steep at the top and gets crowded with beginners and ski schools.
Go under the gondola (at the top of the village) and down towards the lower part of the village is a chair lift (on the left) called "Belle Plagne" which takes you up to a gentle run down again. Only downside to this run is that unless you are carrying on down to do it again you have to pole/walk uphill.

bluebull, my own extra piece of advice for a very nervous skier is to ski ONLY in her lessons for the first day or so, till she finds her feet a bit. She's extremely unlikely to come to any harm with an instructor, but doing what other people think are "easy" runs and being worried about holding everybody up will not be much fun for her. Lesson, then sit in a café and have a nice drink. Little Angel

coolhandluke - there were a couple of cash machines 2 seasons ago but they did empty and so had to wait a day until they were filled up. no idea how common running out of cash is.

bluebull - as Michael B says the very start of the run down to Bellecote is quite steep but once down it gives access to the Arpette chair lift and the blue runs back towards Belle Plagne are superb blue cruising runs to help gain confidence.

enjoy.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Depends from where you start in the village - if you come down from the snowpark end of the village then no it's not steep, if you come down the 'main blue' (as if you were going to Bellecote down St. Jacques, or Arpette) then there's one pitch just beside the village that can be a bit scary as is somewhat steeper and generally a bit busier.

Agreed something like L'arpette run itself but go into the top of the village and through it, are nice and gentle.

There's a beginers chairlift on the piste which runs past Belle Plagne. This is an ideal way to start skiing and then, as others have said, the steeper (but short and forgiving) descent to Plagne Centre gives access to L'Arpette with it's gentle blue back to Belle Plagne. She can even flatter herself by going on the parallel red run which is just the same really.

Cash machines by the shops on one of those catwalks if memory serves.
