Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

sizing poles...

I think I've been sizing ski poles wrong for years!! Black Diamond says If you’re testing for length in a store with shoes on, flip the poles upside down so the grip is on the floor and grab the pole tip just above the basket. Your elbow should have about a 90 degree bend

I've always grabbed it underneath the basket!

Got to remember that the tip sticks into the ground (which is why we flip them upside doown) BUT your skis and boots (probably with riser pads) will raise you up further when you are actually using them . SO i find that holidng ABOVE the basket gives me a better length pole.

If BD says 'above' the basket, they mean the area closest to the grip. Not much use flipping the pole around if you're going to grab it at the end anyway.
I'm sure your 'underneath' the basket is the same area Smile

In spirit of the topic: I buy my poles 5 cm shorter, gets me more to the front seat.
edit: actually, 10cm shorter compared to my body length.

I've been sizing the kids poles this week and I've decided that with a good 5cm from the basket to the pole tip its a black art. After all depending on the snow surface you could be striking the tip on ice or be sinking up the basket in softer snow. Also, I think there is very little in the arm angle plus or minus the 5cm when you try to see if the arm is at right angles or not - def. as much a black art as boot fitting I think wink
