Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I've had the pleasure a few times Toofy Grin The last most memorable day was probably in Tignes December 2007 where we had waist deep in places and very light. Had to keep stopping because my mouth and nose kept clogging up with powder snow!!!!

Maybe not quite the same, but I was lucky to ski about as good as it gets on piste in Switzerland last year we had about a foot plus of virgin unbashed icing sugar on top of a prepared pisted base to play in for a day - absolutely hillarious - the sort of snow your skis, boot and the bottom 4" of your salopettes vanished in.

I have not skied in snow like that but have experienced it twice in finland, both times were if Feb and the snow was at least a meter deep and soft and fluffy, couldn't ski in it though as I just sank, snowboarding OH had a wonderful time in it though

Yes, Finland this Jan. Who cares if they only have 25km of piste when they have snow like that?

Also skied with the snow over my knees in Andorra, but that was unintentional and the pisties were yelling at us to hurry up so they could close the mountain behind us. That was Christmas 2003, and it snowed so heavily the snow came up to my kitchen window sill - it all fell overnight.

There was snow like that on the 20th Dec, so light you sink right down to any base unless you have fat skis.

it is actually very rare in the Alps as the air is not dry enough. It is one reason why the Mercans use fat, rockered skis which we don't really need in Yurope. Unless you can't ski that is.

A couple of times spring to mind. It was rather fun although frequent faceshots meant breathing was occasionally quite tricky.

skir67,

Yes had similar on piste (all of them) in Les houches 4 years back - we all went there from Chamonix because of the trees which would give us protection from teh snow.

Turned into a blizzard and we had a hilarious (for most of us) few hours in snow above our knees in places.

One prob was one of our group who had bought a pair of polarizing goggles that week - effectively skiing in a black out in teh middle of a white out ! Well don to the ski guide who swapped his goggles for hers so that she could get down

Les Gets/Morzine, then up to Avoriaz in Feb '08. None of the pistes had been bashed, and hardly anyone was out. Best skiing day of my life so far probably!

I can vouch for Mike POW as I too have skied powder like that in Niseko Japan - Mike just ski's it in more style than me!. The north island of Japan is indeed a freak of nature when it comes to awesome powder conditions given the relatively low altitude.

davidof, semantics but fat rockered skis's goal when pushed to market (after the Spatula, I guess) was to ski cement type snow with high water content and upside down snow/crust/layers - they're actually not that much different in blower snow (though, planeing higher in light snow on top of funky/bumpy snow is definitely more pleasant). I don't think it's that you "don't need" fat rockered skis in Europe, but less snow and more vert (so more dynamic conditions rather than being reasonably sure of soft ish snow everywhere) makes them less appealing.

Many times mostly off of the top of the Aiguille du Midi for really deep light fluffy stuff. Last time i skied anything as light as that was on the grands montets, easter week of 2008. About half an hour before they shut the mountain.

Am I the only one who thinks that video was duller than a dull thing?

To answer the original question, yes, many times. In Sainte Foy (of course), Val d'Isere, Les Arcs, Areches Beaufort, Mount Potts (NZ), Fernie, Passo Tonale and on 2 very memorable occasions in Scotland!

Actually, make that never - I have snowboarded those kinds of conditions many times! Toofy Grin

frank4short, Bizarrely mine was Grands Montets as well on a May Day Bank holiday a few years ago, I say that because I had been cat skiing in Canada that season in beautiful fluff but still to this day I have never had face shots like I did in Chamonix.

Valloire 20 Jan 1998 - we went up on a chair lift that stopped half way up, swinging in the wind. We wondered whether they knew we were there. After half an hour (pre mobile) on the side of a mountain with no one else on the chairlift (it was the 8.30am "first lift up") the lift finally started moving again. When we got to the top they told us that the pistes had not yet been groomed and that they were shutting the lifts!!! Red from the top to the bottom through the trees, waist high all the way down. Wonderful! The day before we were apologising to our friends for choosing a resort where we were skiing on rocks! They stayed in bed that morning. Dooh. Then there was...no don't laugh...St Moritz, 7 April 2001. We went for a long weekend, 3* italian hotel by the station. Did figures of 8 behind the piste basher (three times!). No one else on the slopes. I guess the point I'm making is - no not seen powder that often despite skiing 2 or 3 times a year...but when you do the memories live with you forever... Totally hooked!

Peter Ross, where were you today? Have been in kerry all week sans skis which was a big mistake. Anyway off out to lug later on in the week to settle an old score with the north prison.

Currently toying with the idea of trying to ski all of the highest mountains in ireland if these conditions continue.

Stocking Lane above Rathfarnham, not very high up as this photo shows, put snow very dry, couldn't make a snowball out of it.

I wouldn't mind trying Lughnaquilla next Friday, Saturday or Sunday depending on weather conditions/visibility, although might be hard work without touring kit? Never climbed that far before with skis and boots! Anyone have skins/bindings I could borrow/buy?

'skiing all the highest mountains', you have touring kit, right? What's North Prison's like, never been up there only heard about it for ice climbing.
