Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Verbier, Mont Fort closed?

Can anyone expand on the rumours that the Mont Fort piste will be closed this season? I'm planning a long weekend there early Feb, will be gutted if I can't have another crack at it.
Any other tips of current snow conditions and apres in Verbs also appreciated, been there many times but not for about 3 years so keen to know the latest news.

Current info coming from Verbier: http://www.snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=56495&start=120 seem to remember some pretty depressing info a few days ago with it raining etc, but that things are improving.

Dr John, I think it opened today. I will try confirm tomoro or some of the other snowHead's might be able to confirm.
The piste markers are up on it.

RPF, pretty sure it wasn't open today although it might have later on. I rode over to Verbier early on and could hardly see my hand in front of my face. It cleared up but by then I was cold and knackered as I'd been on my own so didn't stop other than for lifts so called it a day and went home for a late lunch.

Dr John, I'd be amazed it it was closed in February. They need enough snow to cover the crevasses sufficiently and the wind has moved a lot of snow up there from what I hear.

I think it was four years ago when they got fed up with waiting for the snow and helicoptored a whole lot up there in mid January to enable them to open it. As you can guess, it started to snow 48hours later.....

Magic Very Happy . It gets chopped quick but its staying mainly soft so not a problem really at the moment.
There were some spots where yesterdays bumps were just below todays powder and could be a problem for the unsuspecting if the light was poor.

Steve Sparks, good to hear they want to keep it open. I'd heard rumours that it would be closed this season but wasn't sure why.

Out of interest, how would you rate it against other steep runs, Swiss Wall or Hari Kiri etc?

Mont fort has been open already this season although cover is rotten as they accidentally blew off the the entire face during avalanche control. cover is improving and should certainly be open in feb.

difficulty is massively snow/numbers-dependent, it can be great for days after snow in quiet periods but nasty after a couple of days in busy times (esp if lots of "intermediates" have snowploughed down it for the "experience" Shocked )

Dr John, Skiers' right is always a demanding descent with a tricky rock strewn entrance and a steep first couple of turns. If you follow the piste downskiers' left as gilo says it depends on how much snow and how many people have passed. The entrance is the bit that people find tricky when it's down to blue glacial ice and there are loads of rocks. Once you're on the piste proper (and it is a piste these days) it's all down to the size of the bumps. It's easier than Tortin and the Col Des Gentianes because it doesn't go on so long. If you're concerned go up an have a look and choose a day when the vis is good and the snow is fresh.

Is the Mont Fort 'glacier' deep enough for crevasses to be a 'fall into and die' issue ?

Dr John, can't comment on "Hari Kiri". IMO (and IIRC) Mont Fort is probably a little steeper overall than the "Wall" but lacks the Wall's requirement for commitment on entry. I would expect that after a large number of skiers they'd be much of a muchness.

It is much nicer than Tortin IME as the bumps form better shapes. Frankly, I have no idea why Tortin has any sort of a reputation. Any time I've skied it it's been rubbish.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I don't know how deep they are and I make a point of staying far enough away from them to not find out!

RPF, gilo, I'm afraid I just think it's rather over-rated. It's not that steep, the bumps aren't that big and they form with an uncomfortable camber. Yesterday I can imagine it would be as good as it would get, but I can think of many places I'd rather be...

Actually, I was. Top powdery morning in the PDS with mates. Lots of fluffy stuff. knee deep mostly, all excellent.

I do, of course, hope you had a ball too.
