Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

7 Dead in Italian Avalanches

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The brave Mountain Rescue guys who died in the Val Lasties avalanche tragedy were:

Ervin Riz, aged 32, expert in helicopter rescue, instructor with the Trentino Mountain Rescue Service, Mountain Guide and instructor in Mountain Guiding

Diego Perathoner, aged 42, experienced climber and Mountain Rescue Technician.

Luca Prinot, aged 43, Mountain Rescue Technician.

Alessandro Dantone, aged 39, Mountain Rescue Technician.

These four were tumbled for 400m by the avalanche, three died of suffocation, the fourth of trauma.

Two others in the team, Roberto Platter and Sergio Valentini were caught up in the slide but survived, they wouldn't leave the scene until their colleagues were pulled free, they suffered from Hypothermia as a result of the incident.

The seventh member of the team, Martin Riz, wasn't caught in the slide and was able to call for help, two helicopters assisted with more Mountain Rescue teams.

This was a black day for the villages of Canazei and Campitello, they will not be the same for a long time to come, I'm sure there will be lessons to be learnt as regards to procedure, but these guys were experienced and qualified.

The snowshoers from Udine who perished in the original avalanche were Fabio Baron, aged 31 and Diego Andreotta, aged 30, who were supposedly experienced tourers and were carrying avalanche transceivers.

The particular conditions that led to the avalanche danger were the windblown accumulations of 40-70 cm of wet snow that fell in recent days on top of a layer of angular ice crystals that had formed during the extreme continental cold weather in the previous week. Numerous spontaneous releases had been reported and off-piste skiing and high mountain touring were strongly advised against as a result.
