Poster: A snowHead

The Dauphine Libere newspaper is reporting that a 60 year old pisteur has been killed after his piste basher plunged into a frozen lake at Tignes. The man was marking ski de fond pistes when it appears that the ice broke under his machine although the police have not found any witnesses to the incident. The man was reported missing when he failed to turn up to a rendezvous with friend.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

My worst nightmare to be honest, plunging into a frozen lake, I normally give them a wide berth but in this case it was the man's job. I wonder if the resort had carried out a risk assessment before sending him out there?

In Tignes for the first time recently and spent a lot of time in Le Lac on the beginners slope looking at the lake, never quite convinced by instructors re-assurance that the lake froze over and was safe to walk on as even piste bashers went on it. Very sad.

davidof, yes, have to admit that ice diving holds no appeal for me whatsoever. The resort has lots of experience of putting x-country tracks on the lake. Wonder why it got this occasion so tragically wrong?

How sad. Was only giving my two boys a chat about the dangers of frozen water yesterday as the chair we were on went over a lake which someone had walked over. Sounds like this one was used regularly.

When fully frozen this lake is pisted accross the middle to mark the footpath. We walked over this comming back from VC many times. It also has an ice rink on it and a skating track that is smoothed off with another smaller machine each morning.
Very sad.

What awful news.
I have also walked across this lake, and seen it many times. Never heard of anything like this.
Looks like a bad run for the family, some things in life are just inexplicable.
My condolences to all concerned.

That is horrendous.
An awful way to lose a life, not that there is a good way.
