Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alpendorf April 2011

Poster: A snowHead
Just had school letter re next ski trip for April 2011. Before I say yes I want to find out a little more....

It seems a lowish place to visit at that time of the year ?800m but does sound like a good, small area with enough to keep them busy. It will also depend on what we do that year and GCSEs so my no means anywhere near a decision Toofy Grin

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
The area has a very strong record for snow and typically stays open til 15 April and beyond. Never any guarantees as I'm sure many will say, but it holds it's own nicely. 800m for the base seems low but it's a long way East. Not an expert but many posters tend to say add 300-400m to get French equivalent (top of ski lift is 1800m so is probably more like 2200m). Can ski on from Alpendorf to Wagrain and I heard a new lift is being put in will link it with Flachau (of Herman Maier fame) and beyond - should be ready for start of 2010/11 season. So plenty of kms of pistes for those that care about these things. Excellent ski schools and no queues for lifts so maximum time on the slopes.

For general info try www.skiamade.com , www.alpendorf.com and my own propaganda below. Very Happy

Lou, I have skied this area every Easter for the last 20+ years and only had one year when we had to motor over to Wagrain for part of the week. Funnily enough it was our first season there! As vman, says the resort usuallynealry always closes the weekend after Easter, not due to lack of snow but due to the agreements with the owners of the grazing rights. I've often skied with the owners of the biggest ski school on the last day of the season as we went around to all the mountain restaurants thanking the Gastwirte for their hospitality over the season to the groups and distributing small thank you gifts. We have often been up to our waists in champagne powder and had a ball, especially later in the day as we try and avoid the home-brewed schnapps offered in copious measures at each and every of the Hütten!

If it is a school trip I imagine they are travelling with Snow Slippers an excellent small company specialising in the St Johann im Pongau/Alpendorf. They have a superb working relationship with the hoteliers, ski schools and ski rental suppliers. They are based in South Wales and offer a super package from door to door. I'm not connected with this company in any way shape or form by the way. I just admire the way they work and know the owners from having worked with their groups over the years.

Add 300m to that 800m and you'll see it compares quite nicely with some of the more expensive and hype-marketed French resorts offering considerably less value for money rolling eyes
