Thinking for a short break, just 4 adults, It seems like a pretty and quiet austrian village, fine for us, but can anyone tell me what the skiing is like please? Thanks

Driven through twice and still have never managed to see a mountain let alone a piste ! Maybe thsi year i'll look the right direction
But you are right it does look a nice little town - bit bigger than village i guess. I remember 3 years ago on the local bus from Sazlburg airport to Saalbach in March in sweltering sunshine , pulling into Lofer - sitting in a t-shirt, seeing a couple in their 70s, in 1970s all-in-one faded suits, holding their skis. Reminded me to look up Lofer when it snowed again !
I'd be interested if anyone has in fact skid there

The GB team were based there at the BOA training camp for many years. However they rarely if ever skied there. The slopes are very limited and nowhere near good enough to train on. Also it is very low and the snow record is not that good. In the 5 years that he has spent there in the team my son never skied at lofer.

Thanks all, we're nowhere near British Ski team standard!! and as its only a short break, it should be fine for us! going in 5 weeks, have found a lovely place to stay, so will post what I think of it when we return, as Lofer has been enquired about on here before with not much response, I'm, curious now!!

I skied there on a school trip as a complete beginner.....maybe 1992?
My memories are obviously vague and tainted by the excitement and exuberance of youth, discovering skiing and being parent-free! But I have very fond memories of Lofer.
I think it was March and the lower pistes were not skiable as the snow had melted but up on top of the mountain the snow was great. It snowed quite a bit when we were there. Big wide pistes, not many people, no lift queues and T-bars we kept falling off. Very pretty, I can remember being wow'd by the views of the forests from the chair lifts.
I recall the village being very pretty too.
Therefore probably the main worry is getting stuck there with a load of annoying young schoolkids learning to ski 
I'd be interested to hear what it's like now.

Hi yes its the same lofer! and at worst if the snow is terrible we can get to Kaprun, hopefully by mid January there will be plenty!!

Lofer is a relatively small area. The main skiing area, up on the Loferer Alm, is reached by a two-stage gondola. There are basically two pistes, each of which allows various alternative descents. Most of the skiing is well suited for intermediate skiers. If you want something more challenging, there are routes down through the trees (I've only tried it once). The run back down to the valley can be scrappy if snow is scarce; e.g. I doubt whether it would be possible at present but I expect it should have filled in in 5 weeks. Since I was last at Lofer they have replaced some T-bars with a chairlift, so the uplift should be quite comfortable. As alex_heney says, there would be the possibility of going along to Waidring/Steinplatte or even further off, if you wanted more variety at the end of the week.
I've enjoyed the odd days I've had on the Loferer Alm - enjoy your holiday.
P.S. I forgot: there are also one or two more-or-less beginners' slopes part way down the valley run (near the middle station) but I've never stopped at them.

Went to Lofer about 5 years ago and stayed in a hotel that was also an accordion builders workshop!
We went for a weekend and caught the local bus from Saltsburg airport which kept it very cheap.
The skiing was good enough to keep us entertained for 3 days and the bars and cafes were great.
I would go back again if a cheap flight to Saltsberg was available.

feefee,Many many years ago, I skied there as a child with my parents--and we stayed in a hotel on the Loferer Alm. Recently, we went back there to the same hotel with my son-- and it was a lovely short break of 3 days skiing--which I repeated with some friends again a few years ago.
I think Lofer is perfect for a short ski break, in fact I may be there myself to meet up with some German friends in January-- but not definite as yet.
Do pm me-- and let me know what dates you are there and where you are staying.
PS The twice we were there in recent years, it was in January and there was PLENTY of snow and no lift queues!

Thought I'd resurrect this thread with e highest recommendations for this town. I learnt to ski there and I high recommend Skischool Sturm and their skiing penguin. (ein, zwei, drei, Bobo!)
We always stayed at the Gasthof Bad Hochmoos in St Martin, ten minutes drive or half an hour's walk away.
There's now a six man heated bubble chairlift where the two T-bars used to be on the Schonblick run, if anyone's interested...

RibenaRockstar, we have now been twice for short breaks and really like it there. We stay at Haus Patricia run by an English couple Amanda and Richard, Lofer is fantastic value for money if you don't need millions of miles of pistes! Would definately go again.
