Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow chains

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

I am going for a quick break in Morzine from 20th-23rd of December and was wondering if i absolutely need to take snow chains?

I have a four wheel drive car and what with Morzine being low down I can't remember ever needed them in the past?

Thanks

Morzine is indeed fairly low and it is unlikely you'd need them. However it would depend on the route you are taking to get to Morzine, and also the latest forecasts are hinting at the possibility of a big dump of snow round about that time. Not at all certain of course as it's so far out, but I'd take chains to be on the safe side.

For Morzine in particular it has to snow pretty hard and low to need chains in a 4x4. The road up to Avoriaz is when you'd most tend to need them. You'd probably be let off given a 4x4 with winter tyres, but it depends how bad it is and whether you look like you should know better. Depends what time of day you expect to be around there too.

Anyway, yeah, do a search. wink

My understanding is:
If an amount of snow is present the police block the road and make you fit chains(on the rear with 4x4's) Evil or Very Mad . If you dont have them you dont go any further. Thats what they say anyway!
If that actually happens is any bodies guess???? Puzzled
Have a look at http://www.skiwear4less.com/acatalog/Snowchains.html
I think at that sort of price you just keep em in your car, if you need em you've got em.If you don't they've been for a drive, but when we have our Half inch over here at least you will be able to get home?????
May be not--nobody else has them or the skill to drive in snow--forgot about that

Snow chains are required by law I think!!! I have a renault Clio with winter tyres and rarely use my chains but the police won't let you go further than they decide if you don't have chains and its snowing....and the chains sell out quick in verey local places when this is happening as you can imagine. I would get some as you could have to make a big detour to find chains if it were nessesary!!!

my guess is you won't use them though but there is always next year or ebay!!!! Very Happy

keep an eye on the weather, and identify where you can get the chains you need for your wheels/vehicle. Some, especially the bigger kind, are not found in every French supermarket. You will very rarely need chains, given that Morzine is low, and you have 4WD, but when you need them, you really, really, really need them. Bot nobody can tell you on 9 December - and it does look like there might be quite a lot of weather around then. Just as well too, as there's sod all snow in Morzine at the moment.
