Poster: A snowHead

After my second ski trip I decided to buy my own ski's rather than hir. So I took some advise, read some reviews and visited Snow and Rock and came away with what were probably not the best choice of skis; A pair of Volkl supersport s5's (I can hear the sharp intake of breath!).
I used these on my next trip (Bansco) with no real problems but the terrain isn't that testing. Then went to LaRosier and couldn't live with them and hired skis (Volkl AC30's) for the rest of the week and found I hadn't forgotten how to ski afterall! Last Christmas (3 valleys) I hired ski's (again AC3) and they were fine but for the last day upgraded to Volkl Unlimited AC50's (very similar to my S5's) and loved them.
In Feb I went back to Meribel with my own skis and had a great time. They're great at speed, carve well, cut through the crud like it wasn't there and hold well on icy bits. The only time I'm unsure about them is when I get onto moguls when a combination of them being stiff and heavy skis and moguls being the thing I'm worst at dealing with, all adds up to problems. I'm happy on all pisted runs no matter how steep (except when there's moguls) and have started exploring off the piste edges.
So after all that... Should I take my own skis again this NewYear or hire or look to buy something more suitable?

agt, is there any point in having your own skis at all if you carry on hiring them anyway?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, I've already got the lesson planned.
Lizzard, no there isn't, but then I sometimes feel the skis are too good for me and wonder whether there's any point persevering with them. If they weren't so damn heavy I don't think I'd worry.

agt, if you have a lesson or two, then they will no longer be too good for you, will they? And Volkls always weigh a ton as far as I can see - man up and stop being such a wuss!!

agt, adrian, it pretty much look as though the AC50s that you liked so much are actually only the current incarnation of the s5s that you're unsure about. The S5s are a wee bit narrower, which I would argue may lend themselves better to on piste activity, but I am unusual that way.
The problem is that you're comparing skis with quite different shapes. The AC30 is about 5mm wider (through the length of the ski) than the S5. It'll probably ski quite differently.
And it sounds, (forgive my impudence) that a good couple of lessons (so that moguls are no longer an issue) might be more useful.
Take your skis. If you don't like them, hire something.

OK the ski' are going.
under a new name, That just about sums up/confirms what I was thinking.
Trouble is last year I was fitter than I am this year thanks to a chest infection that just wouldn't go away for the last 5 weeks. Given the milage we tend to rack up, My legs might give out by day 2.
Lizzard, Who told you my middle name is "wuss" ?

You know it makes sense.

agt, that's alright, sounds like you were working too hard in the bumps before, plastering up gaps in technique and balance with muscular athleticism.
Mind you, if you have been happy on the S5s your balance is likely a bit above average.
