Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is there such a thing as a cross between sunglasses and goggles?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I hate goggles. I hate the elastic thing round my head and the huge plastic thing covering half my face, squashing my nose and irritating the skin on my cheeks/forehead. However, when it comes to dodgy light/visibility conditions, they do of course have their uses.

So has anyone invented an in-between product? Essentially worn like sunglasses over the ears and high on the bridge of the nose, but with lenses to suit bad light/visibility and the ability to keep falling snow out?

I have fairly close-fitting sunglasses but they're still a bit rubbish when it snows. Does such a thing exist? If not, is there a gap in the market?

queen bodecia, have a look at cycling glasses. Many come with interchangeable lenses of various colours, plus full UV protection. They have a lot of similarities with skiing glasses. A quick look finds:

pam w, I admit I'm tempted to order those anyway at that price and get them delivered to my brother's house as I'll see him on Christmas Day.

Christmas present to myself. One of many (oops, already bought skis and ski jacket, this place is BAD for my bank balance, lol!)

sarah, oooh! Not seen any in Decathlon yet, maybe I should stop by and have a proper look. It's only 2 miles away after all!

comprex, the idea is to ditch the goggles. I really don't like them and would prefer something that does the same job without being so horrid!

queen bodecia, yes, I understand that you never want to wear the ones you have again. My point, and I think arv's, is that at least one, possibly three of the complaints you lodge against them is that the shape of the goggles you have simply does not fit your face:

" I hate the elastic thing round my head" <- is probably too tight for your head because
" squashing my nose" <- the goggles are so big that they punch your nose down to sit flush against your face
" and the huge plastic thing covering half my face" <- sounds entirely too big which explains the nose problem.
" and irritating the skin on my cheeks/forehead." <- again sounds too big, so big that the strap has to be so tight as to cause pressure points.

Then you say:
"with lenses to suit bad light/visibility and the ability to keep falling snow out"

which is are both secondary, not primary reasons to wear goggles, the primary reason being to manage airflow around the face so that no cold, high speed air gets in to cause a blink reflex or eye tearing.

Then you say:

"I have fairly close-fitting sunglasses " <- which should be sufficient to manage airflow, at low speeds anyway

Then you say:

"but they're still a bit rubbish when it snows." <-which tells me that either they still allow cold drafts in, or snowflakes stick to them.

Do you see how that paints you into a corner?

You have now given yourself the task of finding a product that -isn't- a goggle, but that fits and performs like your first pair of goggles -should- have fit and performed?

comprex, Lizzard, you both saved me saying what I wanted to say.

I hated goggles until I bought a decent pair (which happened to be Oakleys). That doesn't mean buying online at huge discount without trying them on, it means going in to a shop and trying different pairs on because all eyewear isn't suitable for everyone. Even 'cheap-great deal (like hell they were ever £70 and if anyone paid that for them they need their head checked) half goggle/glasses may not be suitable for you and you may end up with the same problems.

arv, all very true. I bought Dragon DXS after trying a mate's pair and liking the fit - definitely wouldn't buy any without trying them on.

comprex, thanks for advice. I understand your points, but they don't really apply to me. I admit my goggles are cheap but they definitely do the job of enabling me to see in bad light and stop snow getting in my eyes when it's snowing. They're definitely not too big, I particularly chose the smallest ones in the shop, I think they are supposed to be for older children!

I don't like the elastic round my head because it gets all tangled up in my hair, and just feels unpleasant, definitely not a size issue. If it's cold enough I might wear a hat with goggles, but I don't usually wear a hat as I get too hot.

I've tried plenty of goggles on and can safely say that I don't like any of them. Ugly, bulky, uncomfortable and the foamy bit round the edge irritates my skin.

To be honest, I don't really mind wearing my sunglasses on a light snowy day, it's only if I get caught out in a blizzard, but that's only happened to me once in 8 ski trips.

queen bodecia, I entirely agree with you and hate wearing anything on/round my head. In fact I do wear a helmet and, in extremis, a pair of well-fitting goggles, but much prefer not to do so. I wear sunnies whenever possible and the fact that my eyes water a bit doesn't bother me - why should it?

Those amazon ones ain't the same thing at all... They will fog up and and end up being a poor compromise between goggles and glasses - the worst of both worlds. What you're paying for (in theory) with the adidas/julbo ones is the BEST of both worlds. That's a tough thing to acheive - hence the price.

The fact that, if you -are- going fast enough for your eyes to be watering, you can probably hit a tree or lift tower or snowboarder within the space of an eyeblink?

I wear goggles pretty much all the time I'm on board. Sometimes after a lunch stop I forget to change from sunglasses to goggles, and the sunglasses are ok for a while, but the draught does make the eyes water. I'm thinking these cheapo Amazon/Rayzor jobbies might work slightly better than sunglasses at preventing the draught. I'd expect them to operate as less draughty sunglasses. I'd still wear mostly goggles, but when it's a sunglasses moment I'll try these instead. At 13 quid it's an impulse buy.

I've got cheaper goggles with a pair of yellow lenses for those days which benefit, but I get a much better field of vision and I am surprised to find I also get better clarity from my more expensive (but still only £30 - Birdz goggles) the only problem is what they look like. Is it soooo 'wrong' is it to wear mirrored lensed goggles?

No im referring to the OP. I have never experienced any of those problems. I have always worn gogs though so i suppose im used to it. Glasses let wind in and are more likely to mush your face up when you bail.

Liveezy, I bought goggles for the first time in 2006. I managed my entire childhood/uni and even a full season ski career without needing them until then. Admittedly I had better sunglasses when I did my season. They had orangey lenses, worked in all light conditions and kept snow out of my eyes. They sadly died when some fat cow sat on them! If I could find another pair of sunglasses like that again, I'd buy a dozen pairs!

So the answer is, a good pair of goggle as well as glasses. Did bits of your face not fall of at -20 when you only had glasses?

Liveezy, not really. The sunglasses I had before seemed to work fine for all conditions. Admittedly I've never experienced anything lower than about -8 and on a day like that I'd choose to stay low and in the trees. I'm only a one week per year skier now, so I only need a broad range of basic stuff, nothing too specialist.

Definitely sunnies for me. I really don't like goggles and only have them for the grottiest of conditions when in fairness I'd probably rather be in the bar anyway...
