Davina Galicia - any of you old enough to remember her? Was quite successful for someone who received little or no support
The youngest Hourmont boy - can't remember his first name although I knew the family very well when they were based in Bristol. He was a slalom specialist and did well in the Olympics considering again he had little real backing from the system. His older brother Paul did well on the professional circuit in the USA in the 80s before returning to work with the family company.
Lesley McKenna (sp?) - I'm not talking about the snowboarder - she was an Aviemore girl I think - very nice and completely without any airs or graces.

Smokin Joe, good one (i do hear he is considered britons best medal hope for the olympics)
Samerberg Sue, Didnt know there were two Lesley Mckenna's, i was on a course with her a few years ago and she had switched from alpine to boarding a while back, are they one in the same? Its Emma Carrick-Anderson

I'm just back from the Alps after a week of 'CPD' training and was lucky enough to hang out with a couple of future Olympians, one who should be in Canada next year and one who's racing FIS in Europe, but is on the right path.
Judging from conversations I had, and reading between the lines, I came away quite disappointed with the support that some GB athletes appear to be getting in terms of development/guidance and 'safe' selection policies.
Not being involved in race coaching I don't know the 'Truth' of the matter, but it seems that more could be done quite cheaply to help our up and coming skiers.

yes you are, same girl, was on the ski team before switching codes - became one of the top riders in the world too. Still based out of Aviemore, still riding at the highest level but doing a lot of coaching / mentoring of young girl riders these days I understand. Has also been producing films for a few years too

Colin B, I think that it was a totally different era then. There were only 6 competitors in both Slalom & Downhill - 4 of whom were British!!!!
Skiing before the 1950's was really a rich mans sport.
Definate No 1 has to be Alain Baxter. The season when he was placed in the top 30 in every World Cup slalom race, with a number of top 10's and 4th at the World Cup finals.
Then Winning his Bronze medal at the Salt lake City games with a truly gutsy 2nd run in awful conditions on the most difficult course I've ever seen. Then to have it wrongly taken away from him and the dignity he showed throughout his ordeal. Our 1 and only Olypic skiing medal. He reached No11 in the world rankings
Alain will always be a legend and deserves his Bronze medal back!!.
Graham Bell did 5 winter Olympics in the modern era. Martin Bell did 2 Winter olympics and was in 8th in the Downhill in Calgary.
Conrad Bartelski got a 2nd place in Val gardena World cup Downhill back in the early 80's & was 12th in the Winter Olympics in Lake placid
Samerberg Sue, Robbie Hourmont was a good young skier and won several British Children's (U15 ) titles in the 80's but don't think he actually did too much at Senior level.
david@mediacopy, Will PM you about your trip to the Alps and conversations.

"All time" must include the future.
So I nominate www.oliverweeks.com
Yes, he only came 2nd in our club race today, but the winner (by only 1/100ths of a second) is 2.5 years older and *MUCH* bigger.

Plugboy,
prior to Alain Baxter's Bronze, he had the best placing for a British racer in a Men's Olympic slalom. However, he received little or know recognition for it and retired after becoming disillusioned with the system as it was run then. He and his brothers were well respected by the Austrian race set-up having graduated from the Stams Ski Sports High School along with many future the Austrian Men's and Women's teams.
If his Dad had not contributed big time to the squad he would not have got a look in. To my mind that was corrupt - "we only take you if you have the money" - a lot of talent has been lost because of the funding system and perpetuates the class system

Samerberg Sue, I don't know much at all about the UK race scene but I got the feeling that there is more that can be done for not much money to cast the net wider.
With so many ex-pats living in the Alps you would imagine that quite a few young racers should be coming through who have been on snow all their lives, so mimicking the development systems from a successful Alpine nation isn't a bad idea.

Searching for Hourmont, I found this useful site for Olympics results.
From this it would seem our best results were:
Mens Downhill: Marin Bell 8(1988) & 18(1984); Konrad Bartelski 12(1980)
Mens Super G: Finlay Mickel 22(2006)
Mens GS: Ross Green 29(2002)
Mens SL: Alain Baxter 16(2006), +...; Nicholas Wilson 16(1984); Noel Baxter 20(2002 & 2006); Hourmont was 21st in 1988, so not too shabby.
Mens Combined: Noel Baxter 14(2006); Ross Green 15(2002)
Womens Downhill: Felicity Field 6(1968); Chemmy Alcott 11(2006); Gina Hathorn 15(1968); lots in 20-30 range
Womens Super G: Chemmy Alcott 19(2006) & 28(2002)
Womens GS: Divina Galica 7(1972) & 8(1968); Gina Hathorn 14(1972); Chemmy Alcott 22(2006); Emma C-A 22(1992)
Womens SL: Gina Hathorn 4(1968), 11(1972); Felicity Field 14(1968); Davina Galica 15(1972); Valentina Iliffe 15(1976) & 16(1980); Emma C-A managed two 19ths
Womens Combined: Chemmy Alcott 14(2002); Emma C-A 17(1992) (also 2 top-10s in 1936 - not Emma )
So other than Alain's 'medal' and Martin's finishes, it looks like our main purple patch was Womens in the 1970s.
World Cup standings are probably a better reflection on overall performances though.

surely it's Baxter, hands down??
Consistent WC high level performances versus "one-off" high placings?? Depends on how you measure it I guess - "best result" or overall best
good shout re Mike Dixon earlier too, 5 Olympics or whatever

Mike close to medal? Are you sure about this? I know him back from my skiing days, when one year we spent quite lot of time together, but to be honest, based on those results, I doubt he would be close to medal. Nevertheless he was really great guy, actually he still is, especially when I have chance to see him once or twice a year

primoz,
I see Mike fairly frequently - I race against him several times a year (or at least I race in the same races as Mike, he's near the front and I'm near the back ), but I was told he came close one year, I've not actually looked at his times behind to see how close.
