Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

http://www.direct-travel.co.uk/ - from £45

"Our winter sports travel policies allow you complete freedom of the mountains (as long as not against local authority advice) apart from in the USA and Canada where winter sports outside the resort boundaries must be accompanied by a locally qualified guide."

Just got a yrs European policy with http://www.insureandgo.com . Includes off-piste as standard.

I think it was about £30, but I added scuba diving to 40M and business which added a bit.

I strongly recommend www.SnowCard.co.uk . Not the cheapest, but their service is excellent when you need them to pay out (between my wife and I we have claimed 3 times - once for an airlift and med bills, once for a stolen bag off a transfer bus, once for a huge hospital bill after a touring accident - never a murmur of an issue with them paying). They specialise in ski cover, and have very tailorable cover (eg for piste only, off-piste guided, off piste unguided, high altitude roped work etc), so you can get cover for all manner of risks, but don't need to pay for cover you don't need.

My experience is that a lot of the cheaper insurance is a false economy - not a lot of help having insurance if it won't pay out when you need it. I would also be prepared to pay extra to use a ski specialist.

I have tended to use insureandgo.com and always found them helpful as a value for money top up from my banks current account insurance if I go over the 17 days a year winter sports limit on it- though I have yet to make a claim, this year it was a bit more expensive as I am off to Canada!
Very Happy
They also have handy cards which is easier then lugging insurance documents up the mountain.

I have friends who have had to claim and they found them responsive and they payed out too!

I'd concur with everything Fat Al has said about Snowcard. We've had to claim once when a delayed flight messed up our travel plans and forced an overnight stay in Stockholm. They paid everything we claimed, quickly and without quibble.

Another vote for Snowcard - we had good experience with a claim after an accident on the piste. The only reason we don't use them now is they won't cover longer trips.

except for their unfathomable policy on off-piste in Europe - I wouldn't consider them after several phone calls which failed to elicit any coherent explanation.

avoid insure&go they are the worst. Still fighting a claim since Mar 09.

Another thumbs down for Insure & Go, we have had to write off part of a claim from March 09 as they refused to accept our reciept for transfer to resort after having to delay our trip due to little ones sickness virus. If we had cancelled the trip instead of delaying and finding our own way there 2 days later, they would have paid up for the whole cost of said trip, which would have been considerably more than the flights and transfer that we funded ourselves in the hope that they would recompense. Mad

Direct Travel Insurance - cheap as chips, slick online service, telephoned me when renewal was due (and gave me better than online price Very Happy ).

Only claimed once, when me son had to be sledged off the hill to a medical centre for xrays, meds and bandages. One call to UK helpline from the surgery, handed phone across to doctor and then had to do nothing other than pay the excess.

How insurance should be.

BUT - I've just received an email to announce change of ownership and it all seems to be tied up with the US sell-off of AIG's subsidiaries. So, suddenly, I'm thinking I need to do some due diligence Confused

I would recomend BMC (British mountaineering council) They may be slightly more expencive than some mentioned above but they are very good and specialise in insurance of this kind. www.thebmc.co.uk.

I get this insurance every year but do a whole season so it may not be economical for you but is certainly worth checking out!!

Hope this helps!

Have used Direct TRavel for the last few years. One of the cheapest around, good cover (including unguided off piste) and favourable reports from people who have needed to claim (I never have yet - touvh wood).

try Post Office insurance. Haven't claimed for airlifts or rescues (yet) but we lost two days to avalanche risk in Feb and they sent us a cheque for near enough 600 quid..........(it nearly covered the beer money :barf:)

I side with those who say that it is the claims experience, not the price, that counts. I was hit by an avalanche in February and spent five days in Sion hospital. I have yet to discover how good my insurance company's response will be. I had a long form to fill in, asking for details of my private medical insurance policy and of my credit cards. They are looking for ways of minimising their liability. So far, no bills have been paid. I rang them today and they said they had only received the forms in their office on 29 March (posted on 21 march) and would not be likely to look at them before 12 April. It is not comforting when you have to fight your own insurance company, on top of dealing with an accident and its consequences. If you can wait for the outcome, I will post it here, and let you know which company it is.

sproggski, if our claim with Direct Travel had been more straightforward it would have been settled without problems. To be fair to them, it was a more complicated claim than usual, and once I had pointed out the error of their ways, they paid up without question all the items that were not covered by our EHIC card, refunded our ski packs, reimbursed our hotel rooms in Grenoble, and our rearranged journeys home to be back in the UK when hubby arrived home. I cannot fault the help I received from the overseas medical helpline while we were in France, and for that reason, and the fact they were still willing to insure hubby with his broken neck we still have our insurance with them.Oh, and unlimited ski trips of up to 17 days each. planeurge, good luck with your claim, and I'm glad to hear you survived the avalanche.

Looked at a few policies before deciding to go with Fogg insurance. As with any insurance the devil is in the detail and I found when you 'levelled out' all the voluntary excesses on your potential insurers Fogg Insurance looked very good. You also get a 'Medi-card' to avoid having to pay any bills whilst laid out on a hospital trolley, everything is paid by them the minute you flash this Medi card and its free (usually £1 for ski only policy) if you take out an annual policy.

Just for reference they also insure the GB ski team, now all I have to do is get up to that standard and get it for free!

Guys the OP is in ROI so a lot of companies you are suggesting only insure UK residents.

I have mine with multitrip.com I went for the platinum annual policy. I have Aviva health insurance anyway so this was an add on and was about €60 for the year.
