Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Geneva to Les Arcs, quickest route????

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello All!
Here's the question, we land Geneva, 09.45hrs on a Monday morning & we're driving to Les Arcs 1800, I'd love to get a couple of hours on the slopes that afternoon as we're only there for 4 nights & don't want to waste a minute!
Which way is the quickest at that time of day, along Lake Annecy or motorway all the way down to Chambery?
The former is about 70km shorter but can be slow, the later longer but a lot of time can be made up on the motorway.
As ever all info greatly reveived!
Cheers,
Lucan

I don't think there is much difference in time. The Annecy route can be slower if you get caught in traffic, but that's not so likely mid-morning on a Monday. I prefer driving around the Lake because it's nicer scenery.

rob@rar,
What do reckon our chances are of getting there in time of get a few runs in that afternoon? The rest of the gang will already be there so they have the passes etc waiting there for us.

Deffo..assuming all runs to plan. Assume you're out of airport around 11:00 then you'll be in resort for 13:00 give or take, and skis on by 13:15 right.. when mates came out to stay with me on the early flight, we always managed 2-3 hours after getting kit and having a bit to eat.

I'm with Rob@rar as well, not really much difference time wise between the Annecy route and the autoroute - personally it depends on what type of mode I'm in and time of day (i.e. to see scenery) - if I NEED to get there, then I go fast round the autoroute. If I want to bimble then I ponce about along the side of the lake (it's real cornwall a-road stuff at best)

The new section of motorway between Geneva airport and Annecy has shaved quite a bit of time off the Lake Annecy route and IMO is the better option these days. Assuming your flight goes to plan and no significant hold up with car hire you should be able to enjoy a good few hours on the slopes in the afternoon.
Be careful if you need to hire equipment as the shops are often closed for lunch mid week.

Cheers Guys.

bertie bassett, I really like the drive through Annecy down the side of the Lake etc, I've done it a plenty of times when I've been going to Val & Tignes, but I've never been in that much of a rush.

sideslip1, When did that open & how close to Annecy does it get you? The last time I did the drive through Annecy was January 2008.

How come you didn't know how long it takes to get to Bourg St. Maurice then? Add say 20 minutes for 'getting up the hill' and you can come up with your own timings

I think it opened up around November '08, was certainly there for early Jan'09 - for more info see there official website - http://www.adelac-a41.com/fr/projet/index.php

Lucan it's now autoroute all the way to Annecy, then as suggested above head off on the RN to Albertville or stay on the motorway via Chambery to get to Albertville

bertie bassett,
I know how long it takes going via Annecy, as that's the route I've always taken in the past; I wanted to know if it was quicker to go on the motorway via Chambery, a route that I've never taken before.

Now "done" Geneva - Tignes (therefore Bourg St Maurice) and back twice via the new road. The most it has cut off the trip has been 20 mins - reducing my personal best to/from Tignes from 2 hrs 45 mins to 2 hrs 25 mins. This means that Geneva - Bourg could be around 1 hr 50 mins on a good run.

Lucan,

How about landing at 9.45 and being sat on a ski lift at 10.15? Very Happy

You can if you ski at Crozet, which is a 20 minute drive from Geneva airport!

We've been there a couple of times and you can see the line of the the ski lift (cut into the trees) from the tarmac as you get off the plane.

It's a great little ski area and perfect for maximising skiing time on arrival or departure day. There's about 1000m vertical to go at and it's a bargain €25 or so for a day's lift pass wink From the top there are fantastic views of Geneva, its lake and Mont Blanc.

dont waste valuable skiing time sitting in the car. I often do monday trips, sleasy jet liverpool to geneva, and on route to les arcs stop off to get the afternoon sking in either megeve/ les contamines/ flaine/lets gets. An afternoon skiing is the ideal warm up the full days ahead. Megeve is the most convienient, large free car park by gondola as approach village and you can then cut through the pass to Albertville when the lifts close, careful though in bad weather. Usually arrive at these resorts 12-12.30, ski till 5ish will be in bourg for 7 then up the hill
