Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Volkl supersport 4*

Does anyone have any experience of these skis as I am considering investing in a pair. I believe that they come with the marker motion binding which is a class binding by all accounts ?

Dogz111, welcome to snowHeads! snowHead

The 4* is a very nice ski, but it really depends on the kind of skier you are and what you're seeking in a ski. It does, indeed, some with the Marker Motion bindings. Tell us a bit more about yourself, the kind of skiing you like to do, and what you're looking for from a ski, and perhaps we can give you some insights. You'll certainly get our opinions! wink

Aggresive intermediate. I'm off to Lake Tahoe at the end of Feb. I am looking for a ski that I can grow into rather than something that I will grow out of in a season.

Hi Dogz111, and another welcome to snowHeads snowHead
In my limited experience (and as I've just done the rounds researching for my next set of skis) I'd have thought the 4* would be a bit soft for an aggressive intermediate looking to grow into a ski. Have you considered the 5*? (I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable such as ssh will be able to give you proper advice! Very Happy )

The 4* would be fine for an aggressive intermiediate, I skied it for a week and was really impressed. There's some flex in it but the nature of the construction is such that flex is basically lengthways on the ski which is where you want it ie it doesn't twist which keeps it pretty stable at speed.

However, right now, I'd not buy another Volkl ski ever, the base on the 5*'s I have is barely 2mm thick and they're wrecked after 20 odd days use. I'm still trying to get a response out of Volkl if this is common or a one-off fault with mine.

If the construction on the Atomic Metron is anything like on the Atomics I have then they're a way better buy.

Dogz111, I'd like to suggest the Fischer RX6, the Atomic Metron:10, and the Elan S:10 as alternatives to the Volkl 4*. While the 4* is an OK ski, it doesn't have the quality of these others (IMO), nor the performance. For a Volkl, I'd suggest the 5* or the 7 24 EXP instead.

Ise, I know what you mean about the base - one on my wife's 4 stars started to become detached after a few days skiing. It was amazing to see how thin it is, it is as though you are not intended to maintain it, but rather throw it away when it wears out. Volkl were good enough to repair it (and gave us excellent service) but having seen the base, which is more like a skin, somehow you think differently about the ski altogether.

Great ski, though, from the skiing point of view. I have read that some good skiers think it a better all rounder than the five star.

Nogs, that's bad news, I was hoping mine were just a one-off that I might replaced Very Happy

I'd need to hop back on 4*'s to be 100% sure but I suspect it might be a better ski in some ways than the 5*. I've not tried the 6*'s though. It's academic for me, the way it looks now is I'll never have Volkl skis again.

If you're thinking about the 4*, you may also want to consider the Elan S08. It is above the 4* in both performance and quality, but has no real comparison in other companies' lines. Definitely worth a try.

Dogz111, I tried the 4* a couple of weeks ago and, whilst it was good for some hard piste skiing, in tougher conditions, it didn't feel quite so assured (also tried Head XRC i800 which was excellent in the crud and chopped up stuff). So IMHO, if you're sticking to well groomed pistes in decent nick, the ski is well worth considering. If you plan on skiing anything else, might be worth looking at some of the others.

Watch this space I think, Völkl Switzerland just contacted me about this and want my 5*'s returned to them for examination. How far this will get I can't say but I did want to hear their side of the story. I'll update when they get back to me again.

I must say I got fantastic service from Volkl Japan, so I hope you have a similar positive experience, ise. And I still really like 5 stars to ski on and my wife couldn't be happier on the 4 star. She's coming down enormous Moguls like an expert on them. They've revolutionized her skiing and her confidence. (I am not sure I like her always getting to the bottom before me...)

Dogz111, when are you heading to Tahoe?

ssh - I am flying out from the UK on the 24th Feb and spending 4 nights in San Francisco first. We are then off to Tahoe for 7 nights and then over to New York for 4 nights.

First time in the US, but I am expecting to love it !!!

Any tips on places to visit etc would be great from anyone !!

Dogz111, San Fran! Great town. So much to see and do. Ride the cable cars whenever you can. The wharfs are great fun, tremendous shopping all over, if you have a car, go visit Marin county one day. You can even get up to wine country easily.

New York has even more to do!

Where are you staying at Tahoe? Where are you planning to ski? Lots of snow this year; it's a great time to be skiing Tahoe. 12-18' of base, with new snow coming pretty consistently. Here are my favorite places to ski there, but they may be a ways from where you're staying:

At least one day that you're there, try skiing Homewood: http://www.skihomewood.com/tahoe/SITE/top/listing.cfm/activity/13/48.36140.91495868/direct?c=1

The views will blow you away!

Dogz111, It's currently snowing in Tahoe, you'll be glad to hear! And due to snow on and off for the next few days, which is good because I'm up there for all of next week! And the weekend after, and the weekend after, etc, etc! If you want more info PM me asap (I won't have web access after Friday), since I live just south of San Fransisco.

ssh, You didn't mention Squaw - but then, I'm very biased!

www.squaw.com

Dogz111, I forgot to say that the Volkl 724 EXP is an excellent ski for the conditions in Tahoe (now if I could only afford them!). And I've not had any trouble with my Volkls which have 66 days use on them, but I do get them serviced regularily!

ssh - We are staying on the South Shore at Ceasars Tahoe. We have hired an SUV (4x4) so we are happy to go exploring and sample different places.

I want to see and ski as much as I can in the 7 days that we are there.

I will have a look at the places you have mentioned.

Pollittcl - You mention Squaw. Isn't that on the opposite side to where we are, or am I getting all mixed up ?

Can't wait - only 7 days to go !!!!

Dogz111, Squaw is indeed north shore, but you should try to get there, too. It is one of the ultimate ski experiences in the US.

finally, some one who agrees with me! Very Happy

Dogz111, there are 12 ski resorts in the Tahoe area so you've got plenty to go at. Heavenly and Squaw are the biggest and most expensive. Boreal is small and boring (imo), and Northstar is nicknamed "flatstar". Homewood is small, but as ssh, said, has spectacular views. Alpine Meadows is pretty good, but if you are short on time travelling to the north shore I'd give it a miss and do Squaw instead. Sierra gets lots of snowboarders. And Kirkwood gets the most snow!
I don't know much about Diamond Peak (Incline) on the Nevada side, and a trip to Mt. Rose might be worth it because the view from the East Bowl is completely different than the rest of the resorts (it over looks Nevada, and I have hang glided from the car park in the summer!)
Reno is probably not worth the drive since you are already staying in a casino! Very Happy

Things to do in San Fran - walk across the Golden Gate Bridge (can be cold and very windy, though); Shop in Union Square. Visit China Town. Walk down Lombard Street (I won't drive down it!). Take a trip to Alcatraz. Have lunch at the Ferry Building. Visit Coit Tower.
Take a tour around the SBC (Giants) Ballpark.
Just don't expect it to be warm, although you might be lucky! It's not called "fog city" without a reason!

What every you do, enjoy yourselves! I'm off to Tahoe (I really should say Squaw) tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, for 9 days! Very Happy snowHead

pollittcl, I would suggest that a day at Sugar Bowl would be worthwhile either going or coming, and perhaps Kirkwood in the other direction. What do you think of that plan?

Heavenly is OK, I guess, but I always thought it lacked personality. Or, perhaps, had two distinct personalities that made it hard to figure out. With some of the terrain that's new since I left, that may have changed (we moved to Colorado in 1990, so didn't ski Mott Canyon, etc.).

I agree with pollittcl assessment of all the areas. That's really interesting! Mt. Rose has a funky old-fashioned US ski area feel, as does Homewood. The others are more modern US resorts.

BTW, take pictures when you go around Emerald Bay. There are very few places in the world as beautiful as that!

Pollittcl - We are already going to Alcatraz. I wouldn't of thought of going to the SBC Gaints ballpark, so that might be interesting. We are going to have loads to cram into 4 days.
So far,
24th - Arrive/Rest?beers
25th - Bus tour and shopping
26th - Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge
27th - SBC Giants ball Park etc
28th - Travel upto Tahoe.

Thanks for all your help, ssh & pollittcl.

Do you know what we are best doing in New York ?

ssh, both Sugar Bowl and Kirkwood would be doable - one coming and one going, although Dogz111, might not want to travel the long way around to get to and from SF and South Lake (to get to South Lake you take rt 50 from Sacramento, and Sugar Bowl is off I-80 near Donner Pass, which is the only reason I didn't persue Sugar Bowl - it's a long haul if you're in South Lake - especially if the roads are closed due to snow!) Very Happy

Dogz111, I've only ever done the obvious stuff in New York - Empire States Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park (take a horse drawn carrige ride), St Patricks Cathedral, Times Square. I'm not sure if the Statue of Liberty is currently open? Don't forget "Ground Zero" (world trade building site). Lots of shops - especially Saks 5th Ave, and Macys (oh, and Tiffany's, but you can get them all in SF too). Take in a show - at Radio City Music Hall if you can make it. One thing about New York is that if you head off down some of the side streets there are often small restaurants/cafes that are cheaper and better than the "name brands", especially if you find a Greek diner! And if you get a chance take a trip on the Staten Island Ferry!

Hope this helps! Very Happy
