Poster: A snowHead

Due to a recurrent knee injury my wife will be very limited with her skiing - if skiing at all - on a planned trip to St anton next Feb. Crunch time has arrived on paying the balance and she is wobbling, so to speak. We are staying in a group in Chalet Traudl in Nasserrein. Any advice on whether she will get cabin fever and kill us all or whether she will find enough to do? Are there any non skiing day trips do-able from there that might sway her.

kewhoward, I have done day trips on the train from Innsbruck to St Anton, so that would be an easy reverse trip too for her; the trip is over an hour and there are loads of trains. Actually she could hop on the train and head anywhere really for the day if she get bored.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You can also day trip in the other direction towards Bludenz, Bregenz, maybe even venture in to Switzerland, tho that would be a longer day (Zurich is 2.5 hrs away).

kewhoward, Is she ok to walk around places? If so then the day trips as suggested might be a good idea. Also grabbing the post bus up to lech for a pootle round the shops / people watching could be fun. There's also a good spa in st. anton itself - http://www.arlberg-well.com/index_en.php and there is the odd place where she could meet you up the mountain (rendl & top of the galzig)
Not sure I'd choose to do it myself however...

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If she hasn't been up the tiny top cable-car on the Valluga she should go for the view - but that isn't going to fill up much of the holiday!

Thanks loads for the info so far. A day in Innsbruck and a day in the spa might help sway the argument...

I can recommend the spa, I had a bad twist to my knee, with some ligament damage, on the 1st day of our trip to St Anton, spent the week pottering about the village and had a few treatments at the spa, had a bit of a ski on the last day when hubby found some nice runs that he thought I could handle, would have rather been skiing but I did find enough to do without leaving the resort.....

Nah... Free bus, and a 5 minute walk, but definitely KKs.
She might want to give dancing on the tables a miss tho.

Besides the train trips to Innsbruck or Zurich, she can take the cheap bus to Lech where you can buy her a very expensive lunch. She can spend lots of money shopping in Lech (Princess Di used to stay there). Also the same bus will take her the short distance to St Christoph where you can meet for lunch in the Hospitz Alm Hotel (One of the best wine cellars in Austria), all of the hotels in St Christoph are very exclusive.
When the sun is shining she can use the new Rendl gondola to sunbathe up on Rendl Beach.
On a clear day the trip to the top of the Valluga in St Anton is a must, the views are spectacular, the first Galzig Gondola is the most amazing lift in Europe and the top cable car only takes 4-6 people.
The ski museum is fascinating.
The village is a lovely mix of old and modern.
The apres ski is fantastic for very noisy apres she can take the free local bus & walk to the Mooserwirt (sells more beer than anywhere else in Europe). For quiet laid back go to the Underground on the piste, a short walk just above the bottom of the Galzig Gondola Station and next to the museum. You can book dinner in the museum, it becomes a restaurant in the evening.
With a knee injury she shouldn't participate in the night time toboganning.

Thanks all for this - any inside info on the lift pass/ticket to do the Rendl and Valluga thing - do you need a full lift pass?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Obviously your ski pass will cover the whole of the St Anton area and Lech & Zurs.
However, your wife will have to buy tickets as a pedestrian on the day she wants to use the lifts. Therefore she should wait to see what the weather is like in the morning and the forecast for the day before deciding to go up the mountain. You may find details on the St Anton website.
The local buses in St Anton are free but if you're staying in Nasserein they're not very frequent so get hold of the timetable. Similarly for a trip to St Christoph or Lech/Zurs get hold of the bus timetable but these buses you have to pay.
If you're with a group of more than 4-6 people it's as cheap to use the taxis to get to/from Lech/Zurs.

Just tell her to get lashed! Mooserwirt or KK haha.
I recommend the Piccadilly too

You know it makes sense.

From memory the Nasserein bus is three times an hour from 8am to about 6ish.
Another vote for St Christoph as a day time meet point - even if you just have a hot choc - it's a lovely setting.
I think on balance St Anton is one of the nicer places to be stuck for a week....

kewhoward, If her knee is up to skiing then there are probably two options worth considering. Ski Rendl - not much skiing there but what there is tends to be quite gentle, apart from some of the lower section on way back to St Anton but she could always get the spanking new gondola back to centre. Other option is to ski around Lech as again is cruisly blues etc. Sometimes the piste from Oberlech down to Lech can get a bit mashed up (if sunny for several days) but she could always take the gondola back down from Oberlech. Or do as Picadilly, says
