Following on from the easter thread today, someone said that if you thought about the cost you probably wouldn't go skiing. I hadn't thought about the total cost before, but when I did I realised that being addicted to heroin might work out slightly cheaper, and you could get a fix all year round. Further analysis reveals that I now spend all of my disposable income (after all the DD's are paid, car run, kids clothed and fed and the other stuff you have to pay for to be considered normal) on skiing..... no joking. Before skiing we used to eat out maybe 2-3 times a week - me wife kids bottle of wine taxi home might be £60-£70. When I read the thread earlier I realised we haven't had a night out since May  I mentioned it to the kids earlier and the youngest ( said, "We don't mind Dad, dinner out only lasts until breakfast the next day, but skiing gives you memories to last forever" Seems she is addicted as I am.
So, question is, do you think it is right to skip life's little luxuries so that you can focus on life's big (white snow covered) luxuries?

Totally right!! If the snow is your big thing, gives you a feeling of well being that not much else can give you, then you will do anything to get there! (within legal paramaters of course!)
Giving up dinners out, coffee stops in town, and other money sucking things makes it worth it when you get out there in my opinion.

I've neglected every possible luxury for the previous 5 or 6 months even to the extent where i (rather large inverted commas) "TRY" to drive economically to save for my upcoming season. Its only when the girlfreind came out with last week "We've not been out for dinner in quite a while nor have we done anything except bowling and seen a few films at the cinema" (Of which i get cinema and bowling free due to work)
that you start to think hmm perhaps its slightly obsessive.
Then of course you get your fix of pow and realise it was all worth it

Sorry Thornyhill, but have you stopped to think that this is a provocative and rather rude question to ask on this forum? Are you trying to make us feel weird or something? Next time I am sharing a stupidly large cup of Costa coffee with my OH I might start to feel rather foolish.

every year i say "will do a cheap one this time" but always it ends up costing minimum of £1000 per person. This year due to the fact we have got an apartment from someone we know for 400 euros for the week it will hopefully work out cheaper, but it is still an expensive week!!!

Funnily enough the other day, I worked out how much per night it cost me to stay in my own apartment, this year it was £250 per night.
Obvoiusly the cost will vary depending on use, and next year we intend to go more often, so it will be less.

Well I'm one of these sad people that works out precisely how much everything costs and my life is totally budgeted for. This year I have saved up £1000 to go on my annual ski trip, but I've also saved a bit extra and treated myself to new boots (£160), a new ski jacket (£60) and hopefully new skis (£200). I also bought myself a new motorbike back in the summer, funded partly by part-ex of my old bike and a small loan.
So yes, the answer is, I figure out how much all this costs and I work out what I can and can't afford. Motorcycling and skiing are treasured hobbies so I'm happy to save up the money and spend it on these things. I don't socialise much, I live alone, don't have a partner or children, so my money is my own and up to me how I dispose of it.
It would be nice to afford a second ski holiday at some point but that's not realistic at the moment.

I try not to think out how much a trip costs 'cos it's a little scary. But if I didn't think it was worth it I wouldn't go. That's the way you have to look at it.

We have 4 kids, taking them all skiing twice a year costs a fortune. The eldest turned 18 last week, for how many more years will they all want to ski with us? The Missus and I will have many more years to potter around the slopes together with our bank balance recovering, reminiscing about the fun we had skiing with the kids.

mine is around 34 - I forget, exactly. He's coming skiing with us this christmas, along with his OH and 3 kids. And guess who's paying for most of it? It's their (very big) christmas present - no way could they afford it. So don't reckon to start saving money any time soon. Oh - the youngest child, now 25 and pregnant, is also coming, with the OH.

Mollerski, if hes off to uni he will probably go on their ski trip, i enjoyed sheffields uni trip loads, and it only came in at 390(plus food and booze), so even a student(with a job) can afford that

I cringe most at the amount I have spent on gear when I actually think about how my days use it is actually going to get. I rationalise it buy saying if I only get 12 days on snow a year I may as well be on the best gear to make them as good as possible. The cost of the holiday itself, although steep, doesn't bother me quite so much because I don't ever go on a summer holiday and would rather be in the mountains than bored stiff by a hotel pool or overcrowded beach. A ski holiday also doubles up as a photography trip for me which lessens the pain.
Is it worth it? Like just about any interest I have that seems to consume huge amounts of cash, undoubtedly not. My spending on skiing is wildly out of proportion with the rest of my expenditures.

I used to keep records of expenditure on ski trips (everything bought on the trip: accomodation, food, apreski, lift pass, skischool..), and between starting keeping records in 1992 (a few years after starting skiing) and end of the 2004 season, expenditure totalled around £65,000 - and that was for 728 days skiing (between two of us), so averaging less than £100 a day. But excludes clothers/equipment not bought on the trip.
I stopped counting at this point, but since it's about 5 years on and we've done another 300-odd days skiing in the meanwhile, and prices only ever go up, and there are now four of us going, I would be very surprised if total expenditure isn't now over £100,000.

Golf 'only' costs me about £600 a year (£400 for intermediate membership fees), beyond that there are very few costs especially if you don't gear whore. I hate hitting £3 of golfball in to the trees which I do far too often.

Ah, I was talking about golf in Munich, which obviously isn't quite the same thing as golf in Scotland ( not that I ever played there or in Munich for that matter ). To join a decent golf club here will cost you many thousands of €! I've even heard of some places where you effectively buy a piece of the club for about €100,000, which had me thinking about how much of skiing I could get done...

Steilhang, I think my club is about £800 for a senior member, not really sure to be completely honest. Not looking forward to paying that in a couple of years

Iski, I always thought it would be a good idea to ask a bank to mortage my life.
I mean, over my life I must be good for a few million in income, so long as I survive to retirement. If they could just spring me, say, a cool mill at age 21 I could buy a house, car, take hols, work hard etc and pay them back over 40 years. It's what I'm going to end up doing anyway, so why not formalise the arrangement up front?
