I use these: http://www.carhire-excess-insurance.com
Touch wood I've never had to claim, which is of course the acid test as far as insurance is concnered.
I liked the fact it covers us for driving on an unmade road provided that is the only access between the main road and your accomodation (all other off road use if obvisouly excluded), whereas I seem to recall alot of them excluded driving on unmade roads full stop.

The annual Amex travel insurance policy I've just taken out includes car insurance excess.

pam w, I used to have that (it's the Premium Plus policy?), especially for car hire in North America, but it now works out better for me to get a cheaper annual travel policy and a separate car insurance policy.

rob@rar, luigi, Thanks for this info. Off to Geneva in a week and was thinking about the insurance charges made by the hire car companies which always seem a rip-off. Have signed up for this.
