Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Meribel/Mottaret Boot Fitters or UK???

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, would really like some advice on boot fitters in either mottaret or england?

I am skiing the 3-Valleys on 2nd of Jan for a week, I brought some new ski's last year and have had my Nordica boots 4 years now they've done me proud but the sole is now quite worn and there looking a little tatty, so im going to treat myself to some new boots.

The plan is on recommendations as to whether to buy and fit before I go or get when there......

I am pesimistic that if I buy in the uk that I may want an adjustment while im there this in turn i will need to pay for on top of the fitting in england.

Buying in Mottaret I am quite happy to do this on recommendations as we are driving down i have most of the first saturday to sort some boots out as we plan to arrive mid morning.

So really any thoughts/ recommendations appreciated??

if any specialist boot fitters are on this forum i ski 171's 4fRNT MSP's and I am an agressive intermediate so if anyone would like to offer there opinion on boots I would be most happy...

I weigh 60 KG and am 174 tall
My feet are quite narrow and I am a size 7-7.5 shoe

Cheers Andy

In Merribel I'd recommend:

In Bicester I'd recommend:

In Leamington Spa I'd recommend:
http://www.lockwoods.com/

Personally, I'd buy in the UK as trying to sort out a boot failure with a shop abroad could be awkward. Wherever you go, make sure you book first - they are starting to get busy now - especially at the weekend.

aw-hicks, try profeet in london, they have a deal with free ride in meribel. You buy and get your boots fitted in london and then in resort freeride will do any tweaks needed foc.

sounds ideal for your needs.

freeride has a good rep for fitting, i think their top guy is "Buck" but not sure he is still there if not ask for Darren... in mottaret ski espace is good but not too sure about the boot fitters.

Guys thanks for the quick response,

do you feel if I get properly fitted in england I will need adjustment over there or have many of you sorted your boots here and then been fine when skiing?

has anyone got any boot recommendations for my level of ski?

Cheers Andy

aw-hicks, hard to say... really depends on you and your feet. i have had work done on boots in meribel that were bought in the uk. have had boots done in the uk and tweaked here as well. you could go see CEM in bicester he has a great rep (and did my last boots) i would think from Bath he would be your best bet and if you do need some work a local guy can sort it.

the bootfitter is the person to get recommendations from absolutely impossible to get anything meaningfull on line IMO.

Uk and spend a couple of long sessions in a big freezer to iron out any wrinkles before you go?

Another recommendation for Freeride in Meribel. I haven't used them for my own boots, but I've taken several friends there for boots, over the last few seasons, and they have all been delighted.

As an ex-Freeride boot fitter in Meribel and Courchevel I'd heartily recommend them over anyone else. I'm also given to understand that they now own Precision in Val too which has to be good news for you in terms of boot fitting. www.freeride.fr

Advantage of doing in resort is that they'll be able to tweek with more knowledge of the fit. They'll also be doing a high volume of boot fits so their expertise will be very hard to beat.

Final word on this is that most keen skiers etc are in the Alps during the winter, thus leaving their positions in the UK and returning in the Spring. Boot fitters tend to be about the closest thing to 'skilled' industry in the resort, they love the snow and hence that's where you'll find them. If your boot fitter doesn't ski, or doesn't ski much then they'll probably be at a disadvantage in helping you.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Oh and another final word......

As my wife is currently finding with her boots: Sitting in front of the TV in the UK gives a different sense of pain to standing up in them in a ski position. That is to say, a comfy boot in the shop/lounge is not necessarily a comfy ski boot, I guess this works both ways. As I'm typing this I've been sitting here in my boots for some considerable time, if I had a pipe right now life would be complete!!!!

Maybe that could be the new thing? Only add to forums when wearing your boots

I find I can only wear my boots round the house for a short time before they become uncomfortable, however I can ski in them for hours without problem.

Are peoples feet larger when warmer?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It's a sign you ski 'nicely' Mosha. When you put pressure through the front of the boot (shin) then your toes should find they have more room as they fall back a tad. When lounging around indoors, the opposite occurs and pins and needles etc kick in.

Often we'd find people turning up in boots that were too big for them, because they'd originally been fitted in the UK with the correct size, but then they'd go home try their new purchases on and buyers remorse would set in because of the above reasons, they'd then take them back to upsize and come to France with the 'wellies'.
