Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My passport's expiry date is March half way through my ski trip. Meaning I've been researching renewing it. Do you know how long it takes to go through the process before it arrives?

I'm also shocked that it costs £77.50 to renew it. Ok it does last for 10 years and it is essentially a tax. But do you not agree that is a bit steep?

Mine was 8 days via the British consulate in Düsseldorf, expiring approx April iirc. Best to do it as soon as convenient rather than in a hurry. But if you do it too soon you only get 10years validity from application rather than 10 years beyond the old expiry.

Christopher, mine took a week from handing in the form, paid extra to have the form checked. Just get it sorted as much in advance as possible and you don't need to worry about it. Probably a bit steep bit steep, we seem to have one of the most expensive.

Christopher, renewals are quick. Use the Post Office checking service. Yes, 80 quid is steep but it keeps the riff raff in.

Yes, but "too soon" means more than 9 months before expiry of the old one.

My passport was renewed in September, it took about 7 days between handing in the form and getting the new passport. Expiry date appears to be ten years from expiry of my old passport. A friend renewed her passport in late October and it also took about 7 days. Both of us paid the extra few pounds for Post Office checking.

For my daughters ski trip to Italy they (the school or the TO or Italy) are insisting on the passport being valid for at least 6 more months from the start date of the trip, this is in case of accident and a long stay in hospital, sounds sensible to me.

It sounds like silly bureaucracy to me.

That is required by some non EU countries before they will allow entry, but not many (more require three months validity).

Even if there were some sort of accident requiring a lengthy stay in an Italian hospital (very unlikely, they normally repatriate to a UK hospital as soon as possible), there still wouldn't be any need for a new passport while in Italy, and there wouldn't be much real difficulty in getting a replacement before coming back to the UK.

bertie bassett, not sure i posted about it but i managed to lose my passport in Bourg St Maurice. Only discovered this about 30 mins before the overnight Eurostar was due to leave. Got on the train anyway, dealt with a grumpy border official on the train (but managed not to get thrown off) and made it home. Had another trip later in the week but did a same day passport replacement and all was golden

And to add to the other comment... A child's passport is only valid for 5 years anyway making the six month requirement a reasonable proposition of the total duration. Which reminds me to check my kids' passports as we are going away in three weeks.!

Turn around of about 2 weeks for me, did'nt pay for Post Office checking. It has to be delivered personally to you, this can be at work however I arranged a Sat delivery after they called me. Make sure you give them your mobile number!

Also the 10 years was added on to the end of expiry, get it done now you've loads of time!

Finally don't worry about postal strikes it gets delivered by a specialised security delivery firm!

manicpb, pleased they have tightened up on the dellivery. All four of our passports were delivered to another house in a different street when we renewed. Last ones we got for the kids came by normal mail too I seem to recall. About a 5 day turn round at Durham office at the moment.

Helen Beaumont, I've had to renew mine and the daughters this year all have been delivered by a specialist courier who also asked for id before handing them over, but we do have a slighty unusual address. A small price to pay for living 'over the shop'. Very Happy

Mine was due to run out next March and with trips booked for the winter I didnt want to risk it later so like arv, Adrian, I did the Post office Check and Send and it was hand delivered and had to be signed for 7days later (including a weekend) which I thought was very good.

Friend at work has just renewed his and recieved it within a week, which I thought was good service.

On discussing the price of renewal, he was chatting to the gent running the shop where he got his pic from. The shop keeper(photograhic place ) was telling him about the new equipment they will need for passport renewal after 2011. It will not only take your pic but a thumb print too - this info will be sent direct to the passport office rather than you sending it. cost of the new equipment will be in the region of £40 000 Shocked He recons that to recoup this cost over a 3 year period they wil have to charge around £200 for the service plus the cost of your passport !!!

I know this is speculation at this point, on this retailers view, but theres often truth in these rumours Confused As Bode Swiller, says its going to keep the riff raff in Smile

Bones, there was some talk of pharmacies being involved in the collection of the thumbprints etc. Of course, they forgot to ask us.

bertie bassett, You taking the p**s?

Only reason the gov't are forcing up the price of the passport is to encourage people to sign up for the ID cards instead - which supposedly will work inside the EU for travel purposes.

I did that, and wished I hadn't, the site was so stupidly slow.

And you can't actually apply online, they just send out the paper copy of the form you have filled in, so if you are in a hurry, that is slower than getting a form from teh post office and doing it all manually.

My wife was until very recently an Immigration officer. She says that for EU citizens travelling in the EU the passport just needs to be valid till the day after you return. It wouldnt be a disaster if it run out while away as you dont need a passport to return to the UK if you are a UK citizen (it helps though). So its just the school being silly

Current waiting for a renew is less than 1 month

Dont forget your E111 or whatever they call it nowadays and remember they expire now so need renewing regularly
