What is the most nutritious brekkie to eat at 7am before a full day's riding in the mountains?
The food types must be reasonably widely available and affordable.
This question is NOT asking for the tastiest food.
I obviously have my own views, but curious to hear others' thinking.

Muesli.
Grapefruit.
Coffee.
Eggs - if it's going to be a long day.

Boiled eggs and toast.
Yougurt and fruit compote.
Freshly brewed coffee.
Can't manage to eat at 7am though, more likely to be 8.30 or 9am.

I don't believe you.
I require coffee in the morning a bowl of something hot and caffeine loaded, with some milk is a must.
Probably Muesli would be ideal and it's what I have here before prolonged exercise. On a ski holiday though it's usually croissants and jam.

Porridge is supposed the best isn't it, releases energy over a fairly long period. Can't stand the stuff myself personally.

Personal favourite is porridge with milk, honey, raisins and a chopped banana. Cheep, healthy and warms you up without moving a muscle. Remember that ready brek advert.....

Porridge with milk and raisins.
Edit: Plus orange juice to start and coffee or hot chocolate

barry, where'd you find porridge after a few warm-up runs?
I like porridge (provided it's served with salt and cream and that it isn't ready-brek) but I find it leaves me feeling very empty after a couple of hours. Not surprising, when you see how very few oats go to make a bowl of porridge. That's why muesli is good - especially if you have one with plenty of low GI grains such as oats, barley, rye. Wheat - in any form - has poor GI so gets burnt up rather quick. Baguette quickest of all, unfortunately.

Spyderman, Respect. I am astounded that anyone can eat so much, especially at that time of the day. And plural croissants, too You must do a lot of energetic skiing to use up all that lot. Makes thefatcontroller's breakfast look positively restrained.

Yep, it's got to be porridge, keeps you going all day.
Although I like museli, the only place it keeps me going is the loo at lift stations!
1/4 baguette with butter and jam, yogurt, bannana.
Bannana and half a baguette with jambon and camembert at the side of a nice piste for lunch and your stuffed till tea time!

I do tend to wake up with the munchies on skiing holidays. A big breakfast negates the need to stop at lunchtime and pay the exorbitant mountain restaurant prices, just a quick bowl of pasta and I'm off again. There's always afternoon tea and evening dinner to top up the levels later.

I'm not sure about the best, but the nicest I've had is in L'Hermitage in Alpe d'Huez. Proper British sausage and bacon. Sorry to offend all those that think I should be having pain au chocolat. We did however book a room for four (three plus one cot) and ended up in a room with three single beds shoved together whith not an inch between them and a cot about 8 inches away
