Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

In the market for Skis - where to start

It's probably 25 years since I bought new skis.

I have commited to 2 weeks this season and probably 3 next. As I will be driving to all of them it seems to make sense to buy rather than rent. I normally ski for 8 days on each trip and it's costing me nearly £100 a week just for skis, I have my own boots.

I've flirted with ebay and some online shops but have little idea what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have a tried and tested method of buying skis ?

This link gives some useful information, and a good ski shop will do the rest - http://www.englishforum.ch/sports-fitness/42108-choosing-right-ski-equipement-you.html. Does any snowhead know a good shop in Kent?

Yes - me too! Although not 25 years since I last bought......

I too had no idea. I picked up the S&R and Ellis Brigham catalogues and they have good guides for the type of ski that would suit you, depending on your ability and your type of skiing. And read some reviews on sH from people of a similar type of ability to me. That gave me an idea of what I'd like to try. And then there's the Ellis Brigham ski test at Milton Keynes tomorrow where you can try them out Very Happy http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=55544

bladeskier, from your post name I am delighted that you are buying skis. Wink

Tell us all about yourself and the type of skiing you like to do and then people can argue about it for a while...

Sport Conrad is then one of the cheapest places to get skis in Europe on the 'net.

Being realistic about one's carving ability i think should play a part in ski choice.

bladeskier, asparlor says... we have had 3 pairs from Conrad with no issues. I am not sure there are many dealers in the UK who are as committed to on-line sales of skis and have a wide range and a big turnover. Some great offers on the home page.

cathy, you remembered ! parlor, 43, 6ft 3in, 17 stone. Have been cycling about 80-100 miles a week for 6 months and my weight has dropped from 18.5 stones to 17 stones, hoping to get to 14.

Ski-ing is probably good intermediate, piste although I do go off piste, mostly with a very demanding daughter.

Off you go then !

bladeskier, indeed we have been crap. I'm not sure Blackie can take all the blame, injuries etc. But, whose fault is it that the squad is so small, him or the board?

If we don't win next weekend, then yes, Blackwell out.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
The most important thing to remember when buying skis is to get a pair of them. That might seem obvious, but during a season skis in the shop may get mixed up, so always check the serial numbers and the bases before purchase.
On the base of each ski you will find faint lamina lines running diagonally from tail to tip. These lines should be exact mirror images for a true pair, left and right. In the past you may have found turning on skis easier either to left or right, and thought this was your stronger side. It was more likely that your skis were not a true pair.
When buying, ask the sales assistant to hold the ski bases up to the light (natural light is better). If he knows his stuff he will realise what you are looking for and will be impressed by your insider knowledge. This will hold you in good stead when you ask for a decent discount on the asking price, free bindings etc. Little Angel

JulesB,
Is that really true ? Does it apply to all skis ?

So why do I swap skis around to even out the wear - that patterning on the bottom only lasts till the next service.... If you are setting up skis for racing you may have inner and outer edges tuned differently but this is not the common case.
