eng_ch I think that varies depending on your locality. For me "going up town" or "going into town" usually means Nottingham but can also mean Derby or Sheffield.

Now going 'up' to somewhere is a whole different discussion. I seem to remember there are 4 places in the Uk you always go up to. London, Oxford, Cambridge and one other I'm not sure on. Any takers?

Getting even more diminutive how would you describe going to the cottage?
PS I would always go down to London, it's where it is geographically and as for Oxford and Cambridge surely going up to them refers to going to University there after school rather than travelling to the geographicla destination.
